I am a firm believer in foundations in education for young children before entering first grade. Education is something they have to be prepared to receive. Being exposed to books that have only pictures are a good start. Having a child explain what actions are going on in the pictures, why they think that and how allows them to practice language skills and analytical skills. "Pre" preschool children should also have the opportunity to explore patterns, grouping sets of like items, and shapes. Phonics, the sounds that letters make, are important but more important is the sounds they make when they're together. Vowel sounds, consonant blends,and the silent 'e' are concepts that are crucial to they're understanding of words. In order for them to read, they must be able to sound out words. How do they hear those sounds? ---they must be read to, often and as soon as they come home from the hospital! Seriously, it needs to start early so the developing ears can become accustomed to hearing sounds. It translates to reading which down the line translates to writing. I love the learning process and have been endowed with the ability to listen to children with respect to their level of intelligence. As a result, we bond and the lines of communication remain open, even after I give them them a dose of 'tough love'. That's my way of being firm; chastisement with a full explanation.
