I have been teaching in a large school district for over 25 years. Elementary education
has been my passion and life for all of the time I have been a teacher. For the past 14 years I have provided differentiated lessons, activities and assessments in the language
arts especially in reading
. Many of the lessons, activities as well as assessments have been teacher-created.
When my son went into the first grade
, almost 28 years ago, I knew after a few weeks of school, the traditional classroom and instruction was going to be quite challenging for him. Depending on the teacher and her ability to identify her students' strengths and weaknesses along with their interests, she was able to differentiate the lessons, activities and assessments for the classroom. On the other hand, teachers who used the traditional ways of teaching often struggled to keep all of their students' interested and on task. It was then that I as a teacher and a parent had to take his homework, etc. and modify and many times reteach the lesson to my son. It was at this time I realized, students learn in different ways.
With this knowledge, I implemented differentiation in my classroom well before "differentiation" became the new "buzz" word in education. Students were quite successful in my classroom even if they were not successful in other subject areas in school.
Being at the same school for the past 4-5 years, my fifth grade
students showed a remarkable increase in reading on the MEAP test. Being the only fifth grade teacher during this period, it was quite evident to my administrators that because of my instruction and consistency, achievement occurred was inevitable for all of my students.
My tutoring method will consist of a short pre-assessment along with an interest survey that will allow me to differentiate instruction specifically to meet the needs of your child. I look forward to moving your child to success regardless of their ability.
