I am a graduate of the University of Michigan with a double major in Applied Linguistics (English as a Second Language Teaching) and Japanese, and I have experience tutoring native Japanese people in English, and native English speakers in Japanese. I also completed the entire American Sign Language Program at the University of Michigan, in addition to being taught about Deaf culture as well. I frequently travel between Detroit, MI, and Ann Arbor, MI, so I can cater to people's requests within a 25 mile radius of both cities.

I tutor both children and adults, and I am flexible when it comes to negotiating times and pricing so that things can run smoothly. I am passionate about teaching/tutoring and helping others, and I am very invested in my students/tutees. I also have an intermediate understanding of Japanese, so I can explain certain linguistic concepts of English in Japanese. I am also available to tutor second language learners of English that are not Japanese. In addition, I can help children and adults learn both ASL and Deaf culture.

ESL/ESOL

I have studied Applied Linguistics (English and a Second Language Teaching and Acquisition) at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for my bachelor's degree, so I have experience teaching and tutoring in this field.

Grammar

I majored in Linguistics while I was at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. In linguistics, the focus is on how human language is learned, as well as the different sounds that humans can make to form words and parts of words (morphology and phonology), the different ways that these sounds are strung together to structurally convey language (syntax), and how these structures carry meaning and ideas (semantics). In addition, I also studies the change of human language over the course of human history (historical linguistics).

I also have had more thorough practice in English grammar, that of which breaking English sentences down into what are called "Trees". These structures are diagrams made to illustrate how particular sentences are structured syntactically, and they greatly help with growing a better understanding in how grammar works. I have been I using this method since I was in middle school.

Japanese

I have been studying Japanese informally since the age of 9, and I studied formal Japanese language education for 8 years. I also graduated from the University of Michigan with a dual major in Applied Linguistics and Japanese. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Japan while I was studying Japanese formally.

Proofreading

I majored in Linguistics while I was at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Due to my background, I am very knowledgeable about English syntax (grammar), and consequently, I am well-prepared to tutor students and proofread for them.

Reading

Through my studies of semantics, as well as experience breaking down arguments linguistically, I have a string understanding of reading comprehension.

Sign Language

I have successfully completed the American Sign Language program at the University of Michigan. There, we were taught both the language and culture of the Deaf community/world, as well as given frequent experience with using ASL.

TOEFL

I have studied Applied Linguistics (English and a Second Language Teaching and Acquisition) at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for my bachelor's degree, so I have experience teaching and tutoring in this field.

In addition, I like to focus on such things as Latin roots to help in understanding and increasing vocabulary acquisition.
