I am interested in tutoring students from Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. My strengths are in reading, phonics, writing (grammar and usage), handwriting, and reading in other subject areas (such as science or social studies). I am also interested in tutoring students in math. I like to use a variety of approaches which engage the students. When appropriate, I would also use movement activities to reinforce skills. I am willing to do homework guidance and help as well as skill-building.

I have been tutoring through WyzAnt since February of 2014. I have 20+ years of teaching experience in Preschool through Eighth Grade, but most of my experience (13 years) was in Third Grade. From 2011 to 2013, I was supervisor of a before- and after-school Latch Key Program for students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. I directed their activities which ranged from informal chatting or playing games to giving homework help. I have worked one-on-one with students over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the students, discovering their interests as well as their strengths and weaknesses in order to discover their way of learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Education, earned at Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska, in 1975. I have taught elementary school for 20+ years. My most recent teaching position was at Trinity Lutheran School, Janesville, Minnesota, teaching 3rd grade (1/2- to 3/4-time) from 1994 to 2007. From September 2011 to June 2013 I was a supervisor of the Latch Key Program at St. Luke Lutheran School, Clinton Township, Michigan.

Elementary Math

In college I majored in education and in math. At one school I taught math in grades 1 - 8. Most of my math teaching experience has been in grades 5 and 6.

Grammar

I have many years of experience teaching English grammar, instructing students from third to eighth grade. I also had another job that required me to check the grammar on the phone orders I was taking. At these jobs I was often the one who was called upon to proofread the work of others to make sure the English grammar and usage was correct.

Phonics

For several years I used the "Month-By-Month Phonics" activities to help 3rd graders become more fluent in reading and more successful in spelling. This is one of the components of the "4-Blocks Literacy Model" by Cunningham and Hall. Rather than using worksheets, this approach uses activities that seem like games to build and reinforce phonics skills. The variety of approaches in "Month-By-Month Phonics" was enjoyed by all the students, and the results were improvements in both reading and spelling.

Reading

My most recent experience in teaching reading is at the third grade level. I have attended several workshops so I could learn the best ways of teaching reading, and I have used several approaches in order to teach each student in the learning style that fits him/her. I think it is important for students to have their basics in phonics skills. I also stress the importance of using context clues to decide if the word the student is reading makes sense.

Spelling

When I was teaching, I stressed the importance of correct spelling and used several methods to help students remember the correct spelling of a word. However, learning a list for a spelling test at the end of the week is pointless if the student forgets the correct spelling the following week. I also emphasized that the student should spell words correctly when they had the opportunity to copy words from a printed text--no matter what the subject was. The student was held accountable for this and was given a grade in spelling in addition to a grade in that subject area.

Study Skills

When I began teaching 3rd grade, I quickly became aware of the importance of teaching study skills, due to the marked difference between the reading levels of 2nd grade and 3rd grade social studies and science texts. I employed the use of flash cards to review vocabulary. I designed review worksheets for each lesson and required the students to correct any mistakes before moving on. We constantly reviewed previous material instead of waiting until the end of a chapter.

Vocabulary

When I was growing up, my parents used a vocabulary that was a bit over my head. In addition to using an unfamiliar word, they gave me context clues to help me figure out the word's meaning. I taught my students the way I had been taught, by using a slightly higher vocabulary than the students were used to and giving them context clues. When they asked what the word meant, I would help them look at the context clues as well as looking at the components of the word (the base, the prefix, the suffix), thus giving them the tools to unlock the meaning of the word.

Compassion and learning go hand in hand — Linda is great! She's very accommodating. I don't stay for her sessions with Linda, but she seems to be very patient and compassionate with with my daughter. My daughter is passing tests now. Thanks, Linda. ...
