Helping students to succeed is my number one priority! I take the time to explain concepts and ideas at my students' level to make sure they understand what I am teaching them. I patiently work examples with them and help them learn to correct their own mistakes. I also assist with homework if necessary. Above all, I help students to gain confidence in themselves so that they can succeed! I have worked with students from kindergarten through 12th grade in the subjects of reading, writing, phonics, math and science. I have a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University. My curriculum included two years of calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, so I am quite qualified in math as well as language arts. Upon graduating from college, I worked in Information Systems for nearly 11 years, but after having children, I found that my priorities changed, and education became my major interest and passion. I currently work full time for a local public school system. I'm looking forward to acquiring some new students!

ASVAB

Test preparation can be a stressful and intimidating ordeal! I strive to make it as painless as possible for my students, while still preparing them to succeed. I cover major concepts with my students, and then we work on sample problems or questions together. Once I see where my student is struggling, I provide additional instruction and practice in those areas. Students preparing for the ASVAB often struggle with math, vocabulary, reading, and grammar/punctuation, so those are the areas on which I focus. If a student wishes to concentrate only on one subject (math, for example) then we will spend all of our tutoring time on math.
I am a very patient and persistent tutor, and I will continue to work with each student at his or her level as long as necessary. Usually, however, after only a few lessons, my students' level of confidence begins to soar! As their confidence builds, they are able to take on more challenging problems and questions. My students feel very well prepared for their exams.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have always loved math and reading, but it wasn't until I had children of my own that I discovered my passion for teaching these subjects! After graduating from college, I worked in a high-paying job for nearly eleven years, but as soon as my children started school, I started volunteering at their elementary school. That was fourteen years ago, and I've been working at the same school in some capacity or another ever since!
Several years ago I implemented a computer-based phonics program at the elementary school. Soon afterwards, I tutored bilingual elementary and middle school students in all of their core academic subjects. I am now working as a Literacy Development Paraeducator, tutoring at-risk students in English, reading, writing, phonics, math, science, and social studies.
I truly love children, and I find it very rewarding to help students overcome obstacles and become the best students they can possibly be!

ESL/ESOL

I have had the pleasure of working with many ESL students with a variety of different backgrounds. My strong phonics background enables me to give my students the tools they need to pronounce new, difficult, and challenging words. I show them how to use spelling patterns and word chunks to determine the correct pronunciation of a word. Because English is my native language, my students are able to hear English spoken without the accent of another tongue, and then imitate what they hear. I have helped students with very little English background to gain confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English.

Phonics

Several years ago, as I was volunteering with special needs students in the Resource Room at my children's elementary school, the principal asked me to consider implementing a computer-based phonics program he had heard about. I took on the challenge, and within several months, I had almost 100 students involved in the program. Soon afterwards, I had the privilege of tutoring bilingual students at a nearby elementary school and middle school. Although I tutored these students in all of their core adademic subjects, phonics was the foundation of nearly all of these lessons, because an understanding of phonics is the foundation for speaking, reading, and writing the language. I received a great deal of positive feedback from my students, their teachers, and their parents, but nothing was as rewarding to me as knowing that I had helped my students to achieve success!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking begins with organizing one's thoughts and ideas, and most likely getting these ideas down on paper, and then combining these organized ideas with the mechanics of grammar, phonics, and proper pronunciation. I have done a considerable amount of public speaking, but more importantly, I have worked with many students of many different backgrounds, and have seen them gain confidence and poise as they prepare to speak to their classes, piers, or their communities.

Education

Wayne State University (Computer Science)

Just what a parent needs for a private tutor! I hit the jackpot seriously when I found Mrs. P. She is a very caring, patient and kind-hearted tutor who has a love for kids and it shows in her teachings. My son, who is entering the 3rd grade this year has learned so much over the past 4 weeks that Mrs. P has been tutoring him. She has a passion for teaching and children, and I absolutely love her for that. I love the way she communicates on ...
