I am a tutor because my favorite kind of "teaching" is one-on-one. I find myself genuinely caring about the talents and dreams of whomever I'm with.
Although I've mostly taught and tutored English writing and grammar at the university level, I have decades of experience helping diverse students in many settings: summer high school academic camps, weekend ACT Prep courses, and adult-education and professional training seminars. Currently, in addition to my tutoring clients, I teach and do curriculum development at the Macomb International Service Center for Spanish-speaking adults who want to improve their English and computer skills.
One of my strengths, as a teacher/tutor, is in creating innovative and personalized study plans for each student's goals. Your dreams are my business! My style is casual and fun and informal -- but rigorous. I'm going to be working hard, so I'll expect the same of you. With mutual commitment, we'll succeed.
Fact is, I already believe in you.
PS: Here are what some of my former students have had to say about me:
"Ruth made learning about grammar enjoyable! I can honestly say that I am an excellent writer because I learned from one of the best."
Emily R., Sterling Heights, MI
"Ruth nurtured my abilities, helped pinpoint my weaknesses, and instilled within me the confidence to exceed my self-expectations."
Raymond A., Warren, MI
"I continue to call on Ruth... for her immense knowledge and her passion for grammar -- but also for the attentive, inspiring, one-on-one interaction."
Tiffany S., St. Clair Shores, MI
PPS: I know that personal tutoring is expensive for most people. But don't let "money issues" stop you from seeking the support that you need. Over the years, I have always tried to adjust my fees so as to be fair to both myself and to what each student can truly afford. I am a tutor because my favorite kind of "teaching" is one-on-one. Every student has different needs. MY FEES CAN VARY according to the type of coaching requested and by the student's ability to pay. My primary aim is to help you succeed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Macintosh and PC are very different creatures, and being comfortable using either is a valuable professional skill. For 20 years, I taught college journalism students in Mac computer labs. At the start of each term, many students could not even turn on the Mac computers. But within a few weeks, they were completely at ease and well-skilled.
