American History

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies which covers United States history from colonization to present Michigan history major events. During College I took a number of US history classes including Michigan history, women in US history, US history to 1877 and US history since 1877.

Economics

I taught high school economics for a semester during my student teaching. I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies, which has a economics component to it, and I passed. I am a person who uses examples and scenarios to make some of the concepts easier to understand.

European History

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies and the test in history, which requires a knowledge of world history from early civilization to present. I also in college took a number of classes about European history, these include Post-WWII Europe and the Holocaust. I have also taken Pre-WWII Europe.

Geography

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies, which covers a number of things including geography locations, characteristics and how they are interrelated.

Government & Politics

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies, which in order to pass you need to know things about government: different types of government in the world and their characteristic and how they are different, and legal processes that different countries use.

Literature

I have read many books for my classes some include, Grapes of Wrath; Lord of the Flies; Lord of the Rings; Romeo and Juliet; Sherlock Holmes; and The Metamorphosis to name just a few. I remember most of what I read with just a quick refresher I can help with most books.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel for personal use in order to create schedules for maintenance as well as to create a list of books/movies. In my professional life I have used it to create a method of keeping track of grades and to use it figure averages.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I used Microsoft PowerPoint almost daily in my teaching experience, and while a student, I have made numerous PowerPoint presentations.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Publisher to create a newsletter for a club I belong to, which includes inserting articles from multiple sources, including photos and getting it printed. I have also used it to create business cards.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word Since I was in middle school to write papers, I have Word 2010 and have written numerous papers on it since getting it, I have written a resume on it as well as using it to create footnotes and other citations.

Public Speaking

As a teacher I have spoken in front of different sizes of classes and different age levels. I have also take a class in public speaking in college. In order to prepare for public speaking I feel that practice is one of the most important things to do as well as not over thinking, and letting your nerves get the better of you.

Reading

I enjoy reading and am effective at being able to read a passage and garner the main idea.

Religion

I taught a comparative world religions class to high school students during my student teaching. I created comprehensive PowerPoint presentations and created projects to get the students to learn about the key facts to many different religions. The religions I have taught an overview of are Buddhism, Shintoism, Legalism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Sikhism, Islam, Hinduism, Mythology, religious symbols and taboos and some Christianity.

Social Studies

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies and in history, which cover a number of things. They are United States history from colonization to present; world history from early civilization to present; Michigan history major events; geography locations, characteristics and how they are interrelated; different types of government in the world, their characteristics, how they are different, and legal processes that different countries use. I also have experience researching history papers and determining types of sources and using citations.

Spelling

I enjoy reading so I have had exposure to many words and due to this I have learned to spell many of them. I also have written many papers not always with the help of a computer and thus have had to learn how to spell many words correctly.

Study Skills

I have taken numerous tests in my academic career. I use a number of techniques to prepare for a test; it depends on the subject matter. I would work with students to find what works best for them and to build a set of tools for them to use currently and in the future. There are a number of techniques I use -- trivia games, creating a study guide, drawing picture cues, making flash cards, circling/highlighting important words, and more -- that are useful for studying and retaining academic information. These techniques are implemented as applicable to each individual subject and topic. I personally used to do Jeopardy games with my classes the day before a test; I also had my students write flashcards and I would check to make sure that they were getting the important information on them.

Vocabulary

I am a voracious reader and due to this I have had a lot of exposure to many different words. Through this exposure I have added a great many words to my vocabulary, I have been able to write papers without using the same word repeatedly throughout a paper.

World History

I took the Michigan Teacher Certification Test in social studies and in history, which has a world history component that covers from early civilization to present. I also took a number of history classes in college, two of which were world history to 1500 and from 1500 to present.
