I have worked with adults, teenagers and children from Germany, Brazil, Belgium and Japan. My principal duties involve aiding in test preparation; including the TOEFL, and improving grammar skills. In addition, I often work with students to strengthen reading and writing skills. In conjunction with the language duties, I have aided my clients with: housing, services such as medical/dental, and extracurricular programs for children as well as other daily living opportunities.
As well as ESL lesson, I also teach French. For both languages, I find using authentic texts to be very effective in exposing students to the target language. Through authentic texts students can be exposed to both top-down and bottom-up instruction. Top-down refers to looking for global meaning, cross cultural comparisons, etc. Bottom-up instruction focuses on grammatical points such as verbs, noun phrases, articles, etc. In utilizing both of these instructional methods, students are engaged in meaningful and memorable instruction.
