Hi, my name is Amy, and I'd love to help you or your child feel comfortable with math.
My specialty is math, and I am passionate about showing learners they can be good at math, even if they haven't been before. I am also able to teach a wide variety of other subjects, and am state certified to teach sciences through 12th grade.
Currently, I teach Algebra I and Algebra II at a local high school. In the past, I have also taught high schoolers Pre-Algebra, Study Skills, ACT Prep, Geometry, as well as Middle School Math (grades 6-8). I was a Title I math teacher for one year, when I pushed into classes of students with special learning needs, and also pulled them out for one-on-one or small-group math instruction.
I have experience teaching math in middle school and high school, and also have taught 4- through 6-year-olds in a prekindergarten. Additionally, I have three children of my own (one in elementary, one in middle school, and one in high school), so I have experience relating to students of all ages.
I have extensive experience with math anxiety, text anxiety, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and various learning disabilities.
If you or your student find yourself having trouble focusing or issues with executive function, I have a large repertoire of coping skills and helps to teach you. This means I can help you get organized and stay organized, and teach you how to be more focused while learning and studying. If you experience math anxiety or test anxiety, I can help you find ways to relax and get your test scores back where you want them to be.
I am available for the short-term, to fill in any gaps or prep for upcoming tests, or long-term, as a weekly supplement to in-school learning, whichever situation fits your family's need.
I generally use a relational approach to teaching and as much hands-on learning as possible. When parents are comfortable sitting in, I often like to tutor parent and child together so that parents feel comfortable continuing to help their child throughout the week.
You'll find me available almost any time during the summer, and many evenings and weekends during the school year. I generally tutor at local libraries such as Berkley, Oak Park, Huntington Woods, and Royal Oak, so let me know where you would be most comfortable learning.
I can't wait to get started helping you meet your learning goals!
I worked in bookkeeping and accounting for several years as I was working my way through college, and later when my children were small. I am familiar with the accounting practices of many types of businesses from law firms to nonprofits to software companies.
I am a certified secondary math teacher, and I also have experience teaching a year-long ACT preparation course to 10th graders. Since I currently teach 10th grade math at a local high school, I am familiar with the structure and content of the ACT test. I help to proctor the test every year at my school. I am confident I can help you achieve the score you want on the math section of the ACT.
I am an experienced ACT preparation instructor with extensive knowledge of the timing, types of questions, and strategies for taking the test. I can teach not only content, but also ACT test-taking skills, which are equally as important on this test.
The ACT does not so much test one's science knowledge as it does one's ability to read content-related texts and synthesize the information contained therein. I am experienced in helping science students improve their science vocabulary, read charts, graphs, and tables, and put information together to answer complex questions. I have been helping high school students prepare for the ACT now for several years.
I am a certified teacher with personal and professional experience with ADD/ADHD. I have educated myself due to its existence in my immediate family, as well as evaluated my students at school for it from time to time. I am experienced with finding hands-on ways to approach learning, as well as varying pace and position, in order to help a learner with ADD/ADHD maintain focus. I can also share coping strategies with learners that may help in a variety of settings.
I teach an algebra 1 course at a local high school, sometimes to multiple classes in one trimester. I have taught this course so often I could do it in my sleep.
As a result, I am able to explain every topic in several different ways and use several different teaching techniques.
I'd like to make my familiarity with algebra 1 work for you and your learning goals.
My college major was Political Science, and I minored in History, so I am familiar with the content in an American History class. Also, before I was Michigan-certified to teach what I teach now, I was formerly Ohio-certified to teach history/social studies.
I enjoy history very much, especially looking at past events and applying them to present situations.
While my Michigan certification is in Math/Science grades 6-12, I taught pre-K a few years back when I lived in Ohio, and I also tutored elementary math students. I am able to help your elementary student with any of his/her subject matter.
I am certified to teach science through 12th grade, and therefore am quite familiar with the science content taught in elementary grades. Elementary students are some of my most fun clients.
Finite math is typically used to refer to all mathematics up to and including precalculus, which can be used in applied situations, such as business.
Because I'm Michigan-certified to teach all secondary math, I am familiar with the math used in a finite math course and many of its applications.
It's my "day job!" I teach high school Geometry at a local high school. It's important that high schoolers learn this subject matter well, since 49% of the ACT math portion consists of Geometry and Trigonometry. I'm confident I can help anyone understand this subject matter!
I currently teach remedial Pre-Algebra to high school students. I also have experience teaching this subject matter to middle-schoolers.
