Dear Potential Student: I look forward to meeting and learning with you. I look for the unique "click" in your learning method. I find out where your strengths are in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Comprehension. Above all, I look for personal progress rather than perfection. I make sure that you are at ease; I am extremely patient with all of my students. I try to create a safe and comfortable environment and do not waste any time. I look forward to your personal improvement: that is the most exciting reason for my tutoring!
I have taught on the middle school, high school, and college levels for 20 years. I have taught everything from basic English to Advanced Composition and Creative Writing. Most recently, I tutored ACT and SAT English Prep for over a year. I had great success with all of my students. Not only did their scores improve, but their grades in class went up as well. Additionally, I had a few ESL English students who transfered to regular English within one semester. As you might imagine, they were quite thrilled!
I believe that my degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, helped prepare me for all the years I have taught/tutored thus far. I know firsthand the difficulties and pressures of deadlines, research papers, and ACT/SAT test prep. I undestand English grammar and its rules, essay writing and its demands, and reading comprehension questions that baffle. I would love to work with you and help improve your grasp of the English language; maybe, just maybe, you may learn to enjoy it as much as I do!
I tutor ESL students by instructing them in pronunciation, basic grammar, the 8 Parts of Speech, basic sentence structure, and work up to paragraph writing. I also make sure a student understands how to write a topic sentence, and then provide solid points to develop a sound paragraph.
When the student is ready, we may move on to writing basic essays that have a thesis and 3 structured points. I also provide students with five ways to write an introductory paragraph.
I also have mini-grammar lessons that I ask the student to read out loud in order to make sure his/her pronunciation is improving. We may also read passages from a textbook or novel to improve reading skill and pace.
Additionally, we work on homework that the student has from school. This may include reading comprehension, reading sample paragraphs, and writing simple paragraphs.
I cater the level of instruction to the student's comfort level and goals. I have had many students improve their mastery of the English language and move up to regular English classes after one semester!
I teach students vocal projection, pace, poise, professionalism, and enunciation while working on several types of speeches.
I start with an Introduction speech, then move on to an Informative (non-biased) speech, then a Demonstrative "how to" speech with materials, and finally, a Persuasive speech with research and visual aids.
I have taught speech on the high school and college level for over 15 years. I coached Forensics (Speech and Drama competition) for 5 different schools. I have a BA in Theatre/English and an Minor in Speech from U of M.
I have great success with students who are terrified to speak at first; they become very confident by their final Argumentative speech. I am very patient and work on progress.
