I'm educated in English, Spanish, Math and everything in between!

I have a master's degree in Communication Studies, so my strongest abilities are reading and writing. I'm passionate about these areas of education and I'm good at making others interested too, particularly by finding ways for students to personally connect with coursework.

I studied abroad in Spain and Latin America, so I'm fluent in Spanish and can teach this as well. My experiences travelling and studying abroad shaped my teaching style and abilities as well, because I understand what learning under difficult circumstances can be like.

I'm comfortable with mathematics and chemistry through a high school level, as well as for test preparation. I studied mathematics through AP Calculus and chemistry through AP chemistry. I'm particularly good at taking exams, so preparation for standardized testing is something at which I excel. I received a 1390 when I took the SAT and a 1370 on the GRE.

I love teaching visual learners, because that is how I learn best as well. It takes more thought and effort for me to teach auditory and kinesthetic learners, but I'm up for the challenge! I never walk away from a difficult student who is willing to learn and I am always searching for ways to make material come alive for my students.

Algebra 1

I passed Algebra 1 with flying colors in high school, although I have not tutored in this subject in the past.

Algebra 2

I did very well in Algebra 2 in high school, although I have not tutored in this subject in the past.

American History

I did well in History in school, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Biology

I did well in biology in school, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Chemistry

I did well in chemistry in school, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Vocabulary

I have an extensive vocabulary and have tutored in similar subjects in the past. I was also on my high school's state championship spell bowl team.

Grammar

I did extremely well in English and have a B.A. and M.A. in a related field, thus grammar is extremely important to me and I am adept in its use. I have tutored in English (including aspects of grammar) in the past.

European History

I did well in European History in school, including a course taken at the University of Barcelona, in Barcelona, Spain. However, I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Microsoft Word

I have completed a B.A. and M.A. in Communication Studies, which means that I have written more papers than I care to remember. Microsoft Word is the only word processor that I use and I know it very well.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As part of my master's program, I had to give regular PowerPoint presentations. I also used PowerPoint during the undergraduate-level courses that I taught at WVU, so I know a lot about its use and key features.

Prealgebra

I did well in prealgebra when I took it, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Reading

I have tutored reading in the past, most often in elementary school children. I am adept at reading myself and have several key skills I use to enhance my own reading abilities.

Spanish

I lived abroad in Barcelona, Spain for eight months, and have spent time in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Mexico. I am fluent in Spanish and have tutored this subject in the past.

Writing

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in Communication Studies, which has required extensive writing over the years to achieve. I am adept at many forms of writing, including creative writing, business writing, and academic writing.

English

I did extremely well in English and have a B.A. and an M.A. in a related field. I have tutored this subject before for a wide variety of age levels and have performed informal tutoring for many of my friends over the years.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL for Spanish speakers in the past. I lived in Barcelona, Spain and tutored school-age children there in English, and when I returned tutored adults who were primarily Spanish speakers.

SAT Math

I did very well on the math portion of the SAT, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Literature

I am adept in English and am very well-read. I have not tutored specifically in literature in the past, but have tutored related subjects.

GRE

I have not tutored for the GRE in the past, but I performed extremely well on this exam and know helpful study skills for test takers.

Proofreading

I currently work for The Dominion Post as a proofreader and have taken college level courses in proofreading terminology and use of proofreading symbols.

SAT Reading

I did very well on the reading portion of the SAT, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

SAT Writing

I did very well on the writing portion of the SAT, although I have not tutored this subject in the past.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with several K-6th grade students in the past. This includes as a tutor, as a baby-sitter who helped with homework, and as a participant of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. I have also taught 1st grade students in a special program to cope with anger by using "I" statements.

Study Skills

After completing a B.A. and an M.A., I have developed my own study skills and shortcuts over the years which I have often shared with others to their benefit as well.

Tennis

I played on a doubles team in high school, although I have not taught tennis in the past. I would be very comfortable teaching the basics to a beginner, but not to advanced tennis players.

Public Speaking

I have given many public speeches while pursuing a B.A. and M.A. in Communication Studies. I also have taught undergraduate courses in communication studies to large lecture halls of students, which I prepared for and delivered in speech/lecture format.
