Hi! My name is Victoria. I love teaching elementary and secondary students reading, writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary. Actually, I believe I could help students learn any subject including math, history, geography and study skills. I have always been persistent and consistent until a child finally "got" it. My son is a testament to that. He was reading fluently at 4 years old all because of our reading together with pictures at hand and using phonics. His grandma thought he was memorizing until she witnessed firsthand that he actually was sounding out words and reading every page. He retained all subjects easily with our using storytelling and word association to remember what was necessary. I am confident that whatever challenge you have, I can find a way to help. I promise that I will do my best in whatever manner I can to get you or your child where he needs to be, and he or she will be proud to see the results. I have helped many children learn through the years from the time I was in high school through my college years and even after my child was born. I understand the frustration for the parent as well as the child when comprehension just doesn't seem possible after hours and hours of studying and trying to understand whatever it is. I also see the relief, joy and pride of the parent and child when the lightbulb turns on and glows brightly. I will also listen and take any suggestions you may have if something works for you. Please give me the opportunity to connect with you or your child. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.
I received my education from Baker College where my major was business and also the University of Michigan where my major was economics. I spent the first 25 years of my career as a court stenographer owning my own free-lance court reporting firm. My position was mostly to take testimony from expert witnesses including doctors and other well-known people such as the owner of the Patriots, F. Lee Baily and others. In order to take their testimony, I had to write on a stenograph machine phonetically and then translate the phonetic words into correct English. Grammar, punctuation and spelling were paramount. I also taught court reporting procedures at the college where every aspect of English was stressed.
After leaving court reporting, I began my career as a closed captioner for live television for the next 10 years. This involved modeming in to news stations throughout the country and listening to the anchors give their newscasts. In order to write what they said instantly, I had to be familiar with whatever was being said including anything local to their stations as well as national news that they may give. Sports was also a major part of their broadcasts. Every word had to be taken down phonetically and then a dictionary which I had developed through years of writing and updated daily would instantly translate the phonetic words into correct English to be read by the viewers of the closed captions on their televisions. Closed captioning was also viewed by foreign-speaking viewers trying to learn English.
My entire career has been spent focusing on every aspect of English: writing, grammar, punctuation, reading comprehension and proofreading. I am confident that I am able to teach all areas of English to whomever may need help in this arena. If you or your child seem to be struggling and are frustrated with not being able to understand the method of teaching, let me give it a try. I am quite imaginative and creative, and I think the two of us together will be able to find the answer to your difficulties and make the lessons far more enjoyable and comprehensible.
I have spent my life court reporting and closed captioning for live television. The method of doing these is all about phonics. One writes on a stenograph machine based on the sounds of words, and then the words translate into proper English spelling based on a dictionary that is pre-existing formulated by me. It is a sophisticated process, but phonics is the basis of all of it.
