Working with students between six-weeks old and sixty-five years of age, I have thorough experience as a teacher, tutor, and instructional assistant in classrooms, writing centers, and private tutoring sessions. Given my related experience and excellent capabilities I would appreciate your consideration. Please allow me to briefly explain why I am an ideal match to tutor you or your child.
Growing up in the United States as an American citizen with a mixed heritage, I was exposed to two vastly different cultures and communicative forms. My knowledge of the English language developed out of necessity but has deepened out of a passion for lexemes, etymological roots, syntax, and semantics. The exposure gained at the collegiate level to the richness of language inspired me to find creative tools to communicate the intricacies of the English language as well as other subjects. Learning a second language can be difficult for some students while math or science can be equally as confounding for others: I am passionate about helping students to overcome roadblocks on the path to a fulfilling education regardless of the subject.
Having earned a Bachelor’s of Arts and Humanities in English Linguistics and graduating with Honors, I have continuously sought education in Arabic and the sciences as a hobby. I have become adept at both teaching and learning from my students. I am certified to teach English to speakers of other languages in writing, reading, and language classrooms but have since gained exposure teaching all subjects. From leading children’s after-school reading programs, tutoring peers and elders in university writing centers, and teaching adults in a co-operative functional-language program in the community, I have varied and exceptional experience working with a multitude of learners at different levels with different goals. My adaptability in terms of lesson plans, subjects, students, and environments allows me to serve students and schools of all fields. Working in infant development care, as an instructional assistant in learning disabled classrooms as well as gifted classrooms, and with traditional students of all ages and backgrounds, I am confident that I can help students overcome educational difficulties.
Most recently, I taught a summer writing course at Detroit Country Day School (2013). The course was geared toward middle and high-school students who needed to advance their composition skills. References are available upon request.
I appreciate you taking the time to review my credentials and experience. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.

A non-native speaker of Arabic, I first took an Arabic course in 2005 at Indiana University. During my undergrad, I was selected as a Faculty Research Assistant to help edit, from a learner's perspective, an Arabic-for-professionals textbook.
I resumed my study of Arabic in 2010 at Middlebury College. After an intensive nine-week immersion program with a "No English Allowed" rule, I moved on to the University of Michigan as a graduate student. At U of M I studied Arabic and worked with the graduate professors on research projects.
Between my formal studies, I have worked with countless tutors and have spent 1.5 years in the Middle East using the language.
Now in my fourth year of studying Arabic regularly, I am at an "Intermediate High" level. While I am not yet fluent, I understand the frustrations of studying Arabic from an English speaker's perspective.
Using my experience studying Arabic and my linguistic background, I am able to help students in their first or second year of Arabic studies get through the seemingly insurmountable basics.
I have studied using the Al-Kitaab series through book three, supplementary Arabic linguistic texts, and now study classical Arabic bi-weekly with my own tutor, who lives in Egypt!
As a certified substitute teacher in Indiana, I worked as a long-term substitute as well as an Instructional Assistant in K-12 classrooms. I enjoyed working in Elementary Education as well as infant and youth developmental classrooms (6 wks - 4yrs). I spent the majority of my time working in first through fifth grade classrooms, with a focus on English, Reading, and Writing coursework. I have also worked in 6-8th grade classrooms as rotational substitute, and also spent time working as a substitute in 9th-12th grade classrooms. I've worked in Gifted and Talented classrooms as well as in classrooms in which the students have learning difficulties at all age levels. I am TESOL certified and have employed such knowledge in the classroom as well.
I earned my BA in English Linguistics from Indiana University in Indianapolis. Graduating with Honors, I have continued pursuing my love for the English language in formal and informal teaching and tutoring positions. From resume writing and class papers to TESOL/ESL coursework, I am happy to help students learn and improve their knowledge of a language I adore!
I have formal work experience for nearly two years as an Instructional Aid in ESL classrooms in Central Indiana as well as TESOL certification.
I am Director of Operations for the Premier Lacrosse Group. I am also a US Lacrosse Level I certified girls youth coach.
With a BA in Linguistics from Indiana University, a front-runner in the field, I learned the frameworks of the field from amazing professors. I had a course in phonetics and phonology, and also revisited the subject throughout my studies in linguistics. I am currently studying phonology and phonics as it relates to the Arabic language. I have a strong knowledge of the International Phonetic Alphabet which is most beneficial in relating sounds from other languages to English for students in ESL classrooms.
I participated on Speech and Debate teams throughout high-school and college. I continually placed in all competitions, with a focus on impromptu speeches. I work with students who are nervous speakers or who simply want to speak more effectively. I customize methods based on the student's goals and presentation topics. In addition to speaking, I also help with speech-writing.
Working with students of all ages (K-12, university and adult) in all subjects, I am adept at helping students focus on prompts, pertinent material and effective ways to study. I have tutored students for exams in my specialty areas (English) as well as others (history, science, the arts, math, etc.) and I am happy to develop study-plans for students. My hope is that even after our tutoring session has ended, my students will feel confident studying the material on their own or until our next meeting.
Since 2005, I have worked in university writing centers, often tutoring adults and more advanced learners in writing and editing. After learning I had a knack for helping others understand how to write, never writing for them, I decided to pursue English at the university level. Graduating with a BA in English Linguistics from Indiana University, I have continued to help friends, clients, and small companies with resumes, essays, college applications, profiles, and websites. In addition to freelance writing and editing, I was also a student writer for the School of Liberal Arts.
Writing is much more than words on a paper! There is a craft in learning how to convey your ideas, appeal to specific audiences, and keep the reader yearning for more. Words are the most powerful tool to convey a message and it is essential that students, young and old, learn how to master the craft of writing. Improving writing skills can lead to more confidence in the classroom and boardroom, both in text and when presenting materials and ideas.
