In tutoring I use creative and nontraditional methods to help the student learn the subject. Many involve everyday objects or familiar scenarios for a more personal approach. A favorite book of mine is "Teacher" by Sylvia Ashton which encourages teachers and tutors to be sensitive to the words and images that are important to the student, to be student centered in teaching and tutoring. Using this method, in part, in tutoring I will get a sense of what is important to the student as I progress in the tutoring relationship using what I learn about the student to encourage and motivate the student.
I taught in a private junior and high school and a college, tutored GED students and was a substitute teacher. Subjects taught in the school were Social Studies, English, Math, Religion to grades 4 to 9. I have taken education classes from William Penn College. My college major was Human Relations which included classes in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology and Philosophy. I have also studied French for many years. My knowledge of geography is grounded in extensive travels around the world for work and volunteering.
