My name is April. I am a special educator with 20 years of experience as an English teacher, a reading specialist and a writing tutor. I believe in the ability of each child and student to be successful. I offer instructional support in the following areas, and I am available to work with students on their summer reading, making sure the task gets done. One on one tutoring enables each individual the opportunity to move ahead at their own pace, while also strengthening those skills where there is deficiency.
Study Skills and ORGANIZATION
Writing Skills and Grammar
Reading Comprehension/ fluency
Proofreading and editing
As a former teacher and educational advocate, I am patient and understanding of individual learning styles, and how it impacts one's ability to comprehend certain material. I have my Masters in Special Education and have worked with all ages. I taught high school for over 15 years in Washington DC and MD., was also an Ed Tech at an alternative high school (teaching Literacy)in Falmouth, and I have assisted in two different after school programs in Portland. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham, and the Wilson Reading program. I have also tutored privately for over 20 years. My success comes from my passion for literacy; improving fluency and the ability to write effectively.
With IM-ing being the mode of communication for many of our students, the application of good grammar and proper spelling has become archaic. It is so important that students do not forget the basic skills, and if those skills: writing, comprehension, grammar, study skills are in need of remediation then it becomes vital to provide extra support.
Tutoring a student one-on-one has proven statistically to be the reason for academic success, especially for students that are unable to voice their needs.

I have had 15 years of experience working with students with learning differences, ADD, ADHA and students with dyslexia. I worked at two private schools in the DC/MD metro area. I have tutored students with deficits in reading comprehension/fluency and also written expression. For 20 years, I have tutored students who have difficulty with processing information and organizing their thoughts so they can write with clarity. I have also worked as a group home counselor and taught in alternative schools where there were a number of students with ADD/ADHD and other behaviors consistent with accompanying LD issues.
I have my Master's in Special Ed k-12 and as a reading specialist K-12. I have worked in two after school programs here in Maine for elementary school age children. I developed Language Art lessons, and assisted students with Math and English homework as well. As a co-teacher, I often developed lesson plans to review Math facts. At one of the programs I taught a unit on African Folk tales and we studied oral story telling and brought in Social Studies as well as writing and reading skills. I have experience with 2nd and 3rd grade, and I have tutored students as young as six/ remediating reading, writing, and some math.
I have been a teacher for over 19 years. I received my Masters in Special Ed and have worked primarily with students who learn differently. Being a Special Educator makes me more aware of how students learn, and their particular learning style. I often work with students that need extra writing support or remediation with reading and comprehension.
Often students have difficulties staying organized and need help with executive functions...time management, scheduling, and everyday functions. I can also help older students with job and school applications, writing college essays and even interviewing skills.
I have been a tutor for over 25 years. For the last two summers I have taught a class at Cheverus High School in Portland, ME. for incoming freshman, concentrating on study skills and executive functioning ie: organization. Study skills has always been part of my tutoring services...teaching students strategies in memorization, cornell notetaking and test preparation.
Wonderful Tutor — In my time working with April I feel like I've grown as a writer as well as enjoyed myself the whole way through. She knows how to keep her student entertained while still teaching more about proper English than I've learned in three years of high school English. I feel that I'll do far better on my SATs than I would have without her. I cannot recommend her enough. ...
