I graduated from Williams College in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in astronomy, and I am originally from Maine.

I can help students in a range of subjects, including test preparation, science, English, and mathematics. The subjects that I've tutored include the SAT, calculus, biology, English, and geometry.

As a high school student, my coursework included AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus BC, and AP Physics B. I received scores of 5 on the AP exams for both AP Calculus BC and AP Physics B. My best scores for each section of the SAT I over three times taking the test were the following: 750 math, 750 critical reading, 660 writing.

As a tutor, I try to impart my passion for the subjects that I teach. For example, I strive to develop the applications and fundamental interconnections of the subjects that I tutor, as I believe that will impart a greater interest in both the subject, and in learning generally, to the students with whom I work.

Algebra 1

I have tutored many students in algebra 1 and I believe that the material covered in algebra 1 is particularly important as it is fundamental to many other topics in math.

The topics in algebra 1 that I can help students with include the following:

Algebra 2

I have worked with a number of students on algebra 2 and the topics that I can assist students with include the following:

-Solving and graphing parabolas and other conic sections
-Exponential and logarithmic functions
-Complex numbers (including complex conjugates, complex roots, and De Moivre's Theorem)

Biology

I completed AP Biology in high school and two semesters of biology as an undergraduate (one course focused on the cell and one course focused the organism). The topics that I can assist students with include transcription and translation, cellular metabolism, and population genetics.

Calculus

I completed AP Calculus BC as a senior in high school and received a score of 5 on the AP Examination for that subject.

I also completed a course in multivariable calculus as an undergraduate.

Chemistry

Chemistry has come to be one of my favorite subjects and I have tutored a number of students in chemistry.

I took chemistry as a junior at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics and later took chemistry at the undergraduate level.

Microsoft Excel

I have over ten years of experience with Microsoft Excel and my background in the program includes using it in coursework in biology and chemistry at the college level.

The specific areas that I can assist students with include importing and exporting data, creating graphs and regressions, and the statistical analysis of data.

Geometry

Geometry has applications in a number of other areas of mathematics and in high school mathematics it is particularly relevant to calculus. I completed geometry while in high school and I have experience tutoring geometry at the high school level.

Microsoft Word

I have over ten years of experience with Microsoft Word and I can assist students with topics such as formatting margins, cross-compatibility with older versions of the program, and adding photos to documents.

Physics

I completed AP Physics B in high school and received a score of 5 on the AP exam for the subject. My undergraduate coursework in physics was the following:

-Calculus-based mechanics
-Modern physics
-Electricity and magnetism.

I also completed a number of astrophysics courses, such as cosmology, while an undergraduate.

Prealgebra

A good understanding of prealgebra is important for later topics in math because methods in prealgebra are used in almost any solution process for problems in a number of later subjects.

I have worked with many students in prealgebra and I can help students with topics such as the following:

-multiplying and dividing fractions
-the order of operations
-series and sequences
-square roots, including rationalizing denominators
-finding greatest common divisors...

Precalculus

I completed coursework covering material in precalculus while a high school student at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. I also have experience tutoring precalculus.

Trigonometry

I covered material in trigonometry in two courses that I took while a high school student at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

The topics that I can work with students on include the following:

-The unit circle and definitions of trigonometric functions
-Using trigonometry to solve for sides and angles in figures
-Trigonometric identities
-Plotting trigonometric equations.

Astronomy

I graduated with a major in astronomy from Williams College in 2011. My coursework in astronomy included material on stellar evolution, cosmology, and imaging.

I also took astronomy while a high school student at The Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

HTML

I started learning HTML and CSS about three years ago and I have been involved in a variety of website development projects since then. I greatly enjoy website both designing and implementing websites. The areas of HTML that I can provide tutoring for include the following:

SAT Math

I can assist students with topics in SAT math such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and word problems.

I have experience with tutoring all three sections of the SAT as well as with providing test-taking strategies specific to the SAT. I can also provide my SAT scores on request.

GED

I can work with students' existing study plans for the GED test or work to create an individualized plan for studying for the test.

I will help students overcome any difficulties they may have with mathematics, science, social studies, language arts writing or language arts reading, as well as work with students on general test-taking strategies.

SAT Reading

I have tutored the reading section of the SAT before and one approach that I can use is that of identifying specific question types in the test (such as word-in-context questions). I can also provide my SAT scores on request.

SAT Writing

I have tutored the multiple choice part of the SAT writing section and I have also tutored creative writing and I can assist students with both parts of the section. On the multiple choice part of the test, I can assist students with topics such as common question types and building vocabulary. On the essay section, I can assist students with topics such as using outlining and transition sentences. I can also provide my SAT scores on request.

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a graphic design program that can be used for applications such as designing flyers and logos. Adobe Illustrator is a vector-based program, and so it can create images that can be scaled to any size without losing quality.

Elementary Math

Elementary math provides the foundation that later math builds on, and so it is important for later studies in math.

I can assist students with a range of topics in elementary math, including the following:

- place holders and decimal points
- multiplying multiple-digit numbers
- long division
- reading and making graphs

Elementary (K-6th)

I can help students at the K-6 level with reading, with operations and other topics in mathematics, and with other subjects such as elementary level science.

Study Skills

I have experience in developing study skills as a student myself. My learning environments as a student have included a homeschool environment, a public school environment, a magnet school environment, and a college environment. In the course of the tutoring that I have done, I have also often worked with students in identifying areas in their approach to understanding material that they could improve.

Web Design

I have about three years of experience with website design. I can assist students with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, WordPress, hosting and CPanel, and with graphic design.

Adobe Photoshop

My experience with Adobe Photoshop includes use in website design, use in freelance technical consulting work, and use in my own artwork. I have experience that includes both editing digital photos and creating graphics.

Differential Equations

I completed a course in differential equations and vector calculus at Williams College in the spring of 2008. The material covered in the course included the characteristic polynomial and Laplace transforms.

Video Production

I can assist students with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and iMovie. I can also assist with the filming process. I have studied video production at the undergraduate level.

MCAT

I received a score of 30R on the MCAT, which I took in September 2010. I had coursework in biology, physics, English, and both organic and inorganic chemistry while an undergraduate.

I have tutored for the MCAT specifically as well as for chemistry, physics, biology, and English in other contexts.

I can also provide general test-taking strategies for the MCAT, based on my experience preparing for and taking the test.

Adobe InDesign

I have done layout work with Adobe InDesign and I can assist students with aspects of layout design such as formatting text blocks and integrating images.

Desktop Publishing

I can assist students with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator. Examples of work that I have done in desktop publishing include photo editing, doing layout work for a newsletter, and creating flyers.

Genetics

As an undergraduate, I had coursework in cellular biology and organismal biology. I didn't take a course in genetics, however both the cellular and organismal biology courses contained material in genetics.

I have assisted students in preparing for other standardized tests similar to the ISEE, such as the SAT, and I can help students prepare for each of the levels at which the ISEE is offered. I can help students with preparation for each of the four multiple-choice sections of the ISEE as well as with preparation for its essay section.

I can help students with both topic-specific preparation, such as working on content areas in mathematics, as well as with test-taking strategies.

Linear Algebra

I completed a course in linear algebra at Williams College in the fall of 2008. The topics covered in my course included matrix mechanics, eigenvalues, and some more general material on properties of vector spaces.

Macintosh

I have about ten years of experience with Macintosh operating systems. I can assist with aspects of the Macintosh platform such as video editing, image processing, and other graphic design, as well as with diagnostics and software repair.

Microsoft Windows

I have over ten years of experience with Microsoft Windows. I did software and network troubleshooting work as an undergraduate and I can assist with network connectivity, speeding up system performance, and other aspects of Microsoft Windows.

Organic Chemistry

I completed coursework in organic chemistry I and organic chemistry II at the University of Maine at Augusta during the summer of 2010. I am particularly interested by the applications of organic chemistry in biology.

Regents

I can assist students with preparation for Regents tests in the following subjects: Mathematics, English, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.

I can help students with both the material covered in each test subject and with general test-taking strategies.

Social Studies

I completed a course in US history in high school and as an undergraduate completed courses relevant to American history and American politics.
