I am an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher currently working as a Behavioral Health Professional in the Bangor area. I am licensed to teach History in Massachusetts, and have a license pending in Maine. I also have a pending English license. I have experience in serving students with Autism, ADHD, ODD, and Down Syndrome. I did my student teaching internship at the O'Bryant School of Math and Science in Roxbury, Massachusetts, teaching one preparation of twelfth grade English Language Arts and two preparations of US and World History II at the tenth grade level. I have worked in a preschool in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts through the Jumpstart program (part of Americorps), and I have taught theatre to 14-18 year olds in a summer program in Roxbury, Massachusetts. I have experience tutoring English language learners to prepare for MCAS (Massachusetts standardized testing for high school students) and SATs.
During my student teaching internship I taught US and World History II to tenth graders. I also hold a BA in History from Simmons College. I have taken seminar classes focusing on the American Slave Revolt and on the role of women in the United States during the 19th century.
I have taken several courses in European History, specifically focusing on Germany. I completed an independent study on the role of women in the Weimar Republic as part of my undergraduate degree. I have also taken a trip to Berlin and Prague to enrich my knowledge of the German and Eastern European Jewish experience.
I believe Geography is an important element of understanding History. When students understand where countries or cities are in relation to each other, they develop a better understanding of geopolitical relations. I have found it to be effective to utilize mnemonic devices to help students memorize geographical concepts, as well as map creation.
I think that it is extremely important for students to understand how their government works if they are to become productive citizens. When examining government and politics, I teach students to consider their sources above all other things; this is a "real world" skill that they will use throughout their entire adult lives. I encourage my students even to consider me as a source, as part of my teaching on this subject is that all sources have some bias. Where possible, I encourage visiting government institutions and talking with people who work in different branches of the government, from the state representatives to park rangers.
