My name is Rebecca and I have an extensive background in informal tutoring and teaching. I studied Mechanical Engineering at Union College and minored in Chinese and Mathematics. Throughout my time at Union I tutored younger students in subjects as varied at Physics, Calculus, French, Chinese and English Literature, as I was an RA (Resident Assistant) in the dormitories. I also tutored the younger engineering students in the use of MATLAB and Solidworks, the latter being a specialized Computer-Aided Design software package.
During my term abroad in China I also became a live-in tutor for English language to a woman and her 8-year-old granddaughter. Through frequent excursions to parks and museums as well as interactive play I helped to improve the granddaughter's vocabulary in an informal but effective manner. I also tutored three other students more formally in English while living in Shanghai. Depending on the age, interests, and desired English proficiency I tutored the students accordingly. For example, a businessman hoping to improve his vocabulary and pronunciation for international meetings we brought in news article on politics and sports to discuss, as well as made video recordings to practice American pronunciations. Another student hoping to be admitted to an American university was given assignments of typical SAT essays which we interactively edited, and read several classics (like Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde) to improve a familiarity with typical English styles of writing.
Because the non-profit I work for is quite small we occasionally have hiatuses in work. The last of which I returned home and substitute-taught at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft Maine, a public-private school in Dover-Foxcroft Maine. I taught English (including AP) Geometry, Algebra, Physics, Spanish, Latin, Biology, Chemistry and other classes for numerous levels, from college preparatory to GED-level courses.
