Throughout my own high school and college experience, I was a top-notch student. I know how to study and do well on assignments and tests, and I know how to teach my students to do the same. I am a full time high school mathematics teacher, and I am certified to teach both Mathematics and English. I earned an undergraduate degree in English and Psychology from Vassar College in 1997 and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University in 2000. I have spent the past decade teaching and tutoring a variety of subjects, primarily mathematics, English and SAT test preparation. I truly enjoy individualizing instruction to meet the needs of each of my students. Throughout my career, I have seen my students make significant strides in academics, and nothing makes me happier than witnessing the pride they take in their achievements. I am willing to travel to towns in the seacoast New Hampshire and Maine area, and I have worked with students in Kittery, York, Cape Neddick, Ogunquit, South Berwick, Biddeford, Kennebunk, Dover, Portsmouth, and Rye. My hourly rate is flexible, depending upon the needs of the student and the distance I will have to travel to the tutoring location. I look forward to working with you!

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 numerous times, in the classroom as well as on an individualized basis. I specialize in making the abstract concepts of algebra more concrete for thinkers who might not be mathematically inclined.

Algebra 2

I am a certified high school math teacher with more than a decade of teaching and tutoring experience. I have taught Algebra 2 numerous times, to both high school and college students. I specialize in demystifying and making more concrete the abstract algebraic concepts covered in this course.

Calculus

I have experience teaching and tutoring AP Calculus, and scored a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test when I was in high school. I tutored students in college calculus and graded papers for a math professor when I was in college. I completed a 2-credit graduate course at the AP Institute for AP Calculus AB/BC in the summer of 2013.

College Counseling

I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Education. I have worked as a full time high school teacher as well as a tutor and mentor to high school and college students for more than a decade. My tutoring has included counseling students in their selection of a college as well as strengthening study skills, test preparation for SAT, ACT and GRE, and editing of admissions essays.

English

Though I now teach high school mathematics, I majored in English in college. I have taught community college English courses and I love nothing more than helping students strengthen their writing and reading comprehension skills.

Geometry

I have taught Geometry numerous times, in both the high school classroom and in a one-on-one setting. I help students visualize and apply the concepts covered in Geometry, and simplify the process of writing a Geometric proof.

GRE

I have extensive test preparation experience and I have worked with several students to prepare them for the GRE, with phenomenal results. Students who have worked with me to prepare for the GRE have seen a significant increase in both math and verbal scores.

ISEE

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a standardized admissions test for independent schools in the United States. The test is given at three levels - Lower (Grades 4-5), Middle (Grades 6-7) and Upper (Grades 9-12) and consists of multiple choice questions in Verbal Reasoning (synonyms and sentence completion questions), Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement. The test also includes an open-response essay section that is not scored, but is sent to prospective independent schools. I am familiar with the test and have extensive standardized test preparation experience (more than a decade of tutoring experience). I am also certified on WyzAnt in similar subject areas, including the SAT and GRE.

Praxis

I am certified to teach both English and mathematics, and I have taken and passed the general Praxis test as well as similar state tests (such as the Massachusetts Educator tests). I have also taken and passed the Praxis II in Mathematics and the Massachusetts Educator test in English (equivalent to the Praxis II in English). I have several years of experience in tutoring for standardized test preparation.

Precalculus

I have taught and tutored precalculus and trigonometry courses to high school and college level students. I have also taught and tutored the following course, calculus. I am familiar with the conceptual areas most students struggle with, and as an experienced math tutor, I know how to make those concepts clearer and easier to understand and apply.

PSAT

Successful PSAT tutoring requires the student to complete practice on his/her own time, so that we can focus on improving content knowledge and test-taking strategies during our tutoring session. I therefore recommend that my PSAT tutoring clients purchase an SAT prep book with practice tests, because students who devote a significant amount of time to practice become increasingly familiar with the test and see the most improvement in their scores. The PSAT is a shorter, slightly less difficult version of the SAT that is used as a predictor of SAT scores.

SAT Math

Successful SAT tutoring requires the student to complete practice on his/her own time, so that we can focus on improving content knowledge and test-taking strategies during our tutoring session. I therefore recommend that my SAT tutoring clients purchase an SAT prep book with practice tests. Students who devote significant time to completing practice tests tend to see the greatest improvement in their scores.

SAT Reading

Successful SAT tutoring requires the student to complete practice on his/her own time, so that we can focus on improving content knowledge and test-taking strategies during our tutoring session. I therefore recommend that my SAT tutoring clients purchase an SAT prep book with practice tests. Students who devote significant time to completing practice tests tend to see the greatest improvement in their scores.

SAT Writing

I have successfully tutored several students in SAT Writing. I give students a clear understanding of the scoring rubric and strategies for composing a high-scoring essay in the short time allotted for the SAT. I also help them develop effective strategies for answering multiple choice questions in sentence correction, error identification and paragraph editing.

SSAT

The SSAT is a standardized admissions test for independent schools in the United States. I have experience tutoring for both the ISEE and SSAT, so I am familiar with the test and with strategies to increase scores. I have extensive standardized test preparation experience (more than a decade of tutoring experience). I am also certified on WyzAnt in similar subject areas, including the SAT and GRE.

Statistics

I have taught statistics at the high school level and tutored several students in statistics. I took statistics at Vassar College and earned an A in the course. I have been teaching and tutoring mathematics for more than a decade and I know how to make complex topics like the ones covered in a statistics course (standard deviation, probability distributions, analysis of variance, etc) more accessible for the non-mathematical thinker.

Study Skills

I have extensive experience in helping students improve organizational skills, study strategies, test/quiz preparation and test-taking strategies. I have had training through various tutoring programs, including Club Z and Kaplan, and have more than a decade of test-preparation experience. As a top-notch student myself, I have mastered effective study habits and practices that enhance academic performance.

Four Thumbs Up! Lori was immediately able to capture the full attention of my 17 year old daughter (not an easy task) resulting in a relationship where my daughter is fully engaged in improving her SAT test capabilities. I've even heard the two of them laughing during their sessions! It's my opinion that Lori has a natural pleasant teaching ability which is strongly supported by her educational experience.
