Teaching has been a big part of my life! I enjoy working with children and seeing the progress that they make in their musical and academic subjects! I am certified to teach Early Elementary grades and Music in Maine and Massachusetts. Before I moved to Maine over three years ago, I was teaching music for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District in Massachusetts for 11 years. I also was a music instructor for 14 years at the Cape Cod Conservatory in West Barnstable, MA. where I taught private and group lessons on piano and guitar. I also taught songwriting classes there. I have given lessons on the piano, violin, viola, guitar, ukulele, recorder and song flute. I have helped classroom teachers add music to their plays and have correlated songs with classroom studies in science, social studies and math. I've worked on Kgn, Grade 3 and Grade 5 graduation ceremonies and played the piano for all assembly programs. Performances have always been a specialty of mine with the chorus and individual classes, entire grades and often the entire school participating. I have also tutored elementary school children in various subjects as needed. Before living in Massachusetts, I lived in Brooklyn, New York. I was a music teacher for a Brooklyn public school for 10 years until my move to Massachusetts.

My teaching methods take into account the enjoyment of the student. I try to make learning fun with positive reinforcement. Children will always be more receptive to learning, if their lessons come alive! Flashcards, stickers , creating and composing are all part of my teaching style. Integrating the arts into academic learning can also help. Even difficult concepts to remember, could be made easier by singing them or even using them in a rap.

In conclusion, I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Teaching has been a huge part of my life for thirty years. I am state certified to teach Elementary Grades in Maine and Massachusetts. I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master's Degree from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Over the years I have tutored Elementary Subjects through Club Z Tutoring Company on Cape Cod and also tutored privately.

My teaching methods take into account the enjoyment of the student. Children are more inclined to learn when the lessons are fun! Stickers and flashcards are part of my teaching style. Math can be more easily understood when using manipulatives such as Base 10 materials, unifix cubes and tangrams. Counting games can accelerate understanding of numbers. Creating original mini-books can encourage reading skills. Observing, graphing and recognizing patterns in the child's environment can help with math and science skills.
I enjoy working with children and seeing the progress that they make in their academic studies. I look forward to helping your child with their academic enrichment!

General Music

I've taught piano, guitar, violin, viola, ukulele and recorders in public schools and the Cape Cod Conservatory in Massachusetts. I've given private and group lessons. I've taught general music in public schools on Cape Cod for 11 years and before that 10 years teaching music in Brooklyn, New York public schools. General music includes singing, learning how to read notes and rhythms, performances in musical shows and learning how to play instruments.

Guitar

I have been giving guitar lessons for many years. I currently have Music Certification in Maine to teach Music in grades K - 12. I have given group guitar classes at the Wintergreen Arts Center in Presque Isle, Maine since 2011. When I lived in Massachusetts, I taught private and group guitar classes at the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music in Barnstable and Falmouth, Massachusetts. My guitar students participated in many recitals and performed locally on the Cape. I also taught music in the South Yarmouth and Dennis, MA. public schools from 1999 - 2010. In 2006 I applied for and received a grant to purchase guitars to assist in music composition. Guitar playing was incorporated into our music classes and my students composed songs on the guitar related to their academic studies.

Piano

Would you or your child like to learn how to play the piano or keyboard? Piano lessons can be fun! My name is Valerie Schultz. I've been playing the piano since I was 5 years old and have always loved it!
I really enjoy teaching piano too! My teaching methods take into account the enjoyment of the student. I make learning fun with positive reinforcement. Creating, composing, songwriting, duets, recitals, stickers and flashcards are all part of my teaching style. By using a variety of different styles of music, my goal is to develop in the student an appreciation and love for music!
At the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music in West Barnstable and in Falmouth, Massachusetts, I taught private and group piano and keyboard lessons for 14 years. Over those years my students have ranged in age from 4-83! They have performed in recitals and in community venues. Many of my students have taken part in auditions for The National Guild of Piano Teachers. I studied music and education in Brooklyn College of the City University of New York where I received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's Degree. I am a member of A.S.C.A.P. Those instruments helped my students to compose songs related to their academic studies. I am a member of A.S.C.A.P. ( American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) for piano compositions and songs I have composed. I am certified to teach in Maine and Massachusetts and now live in Northern Maine.
I look forward to helping you unlock your imagination and create a musical treasure!

When I lived in Massachusetts, I taught music in the South Yarmouth and Dennis, MA. public schools from 1999 - 2010. These students performed in school recitals and performances and then went on to join our school orchestras. I have played the violin since the age of 10 and played the violin in my high school orchestra. I enjoy seeing my students progress year after year with their violin and viola studies.
