Teaching English in Russia through the Fulbright Program this past year has confirmed my desire to share my enthusiasm for both Russian and English language through individual tutoring. Some of my most rewarding moments on the job were one-one-on interactions with university students in which I was able to help them achieve breakthroughs, and I am eager to continue to help students of all ages reach their linguistic goals.
My love for the Russian language began at the age of twelve when I visited the country and developed friendships with Russians, and as someone who has reached a high-advanced level of proficiency largely through self-study and individual tutoring, I believe firmly in the possibility of reaching a high level of proficiency through one-on-one tutoring if the learner is highly motivated. Although I am not a native speaker and have a slight accent, I am well-versed in Russian phonetics and use recordings of native speakers in my lessons in order to help the learner reach as close to native pronunciation as possible. I strive to make my lessons varied and interesting, maintaining a balance between grammatical instruction and communicative competency through the use of music, role playing games, and media appropriate to the student's level.
I also specialize in instructing English Language Learners, and in addition to being TEFL certified, have had 9 months of experience teaching ELLS of varying levels at a Russian university and will begin pursuing my Masters degree in TESOL this fall. I enjoy teaching ELLS of all ages and strive to create an empowering environment for the learner in which he/she is consistently challenged, yet equipped to meet each challenge through encouragement and clear instruction.
Although I am currently located in Bangor, ME, should a tutoring position arise that is full time or close to full time, I would be willing to consider relocating, especially to the Boston, Massachusetts area, which is close to my Alma Mater, Gordon College.
I look forward to hearing from you and am eager to help you achieve success in your linguistic pursuits!
I have been certified at an Advanced-High speaking proficiency through ALTA language services, receiving a 10 out of 12 on an oral proficiency interview (12=proficiency of a native speaker). I have achieved this level of proficiency through over 4 years of self-study combined with two-study abroad experiences and two government grants to study Russian (Critical Language Scholarship, 2012; Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award, 2013). Besides studying the language on an academic level, my 6 trips to Russia, which combined, equal over 18 months, have equipped me with an understanding of the cultural/pragmatic uses of the language.
