I recently graduated with honors from MassBay Community College in Waltham MA where I earned an AS in Mechanical Engineering. I worked as a peer tutor through my entire two years at MassBay gaining experience tutoring math, physics, and computer use. I am enthusiastic to work with students of all ages and abilities from kids learning at advanced levels to adults in need of basic math or computer skills.

I strive to achieve real understanding of the subject matter rather than memorization of facts or procedures. When a student understands why they are doing something they can be confident that they are doing it right, and can figure out for themselves any steps they may forget in a test situation.

I find that, in many cases, students benefit as much from being told what they are doing right as what they are doing wrong. In order to know what to study, it helps to know what you don't need to study.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Over the past academic year I have tutored fellow students in math ranging from basic arithmetic to Calculus 2. I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, so I can approach them from different angles, and effectively assist students with a wide range of strengths and learning styles. I can often find underlying sources of difficulties students are having, and help them with the cause of the problem rather than the symptom.

Python

I completed the MIT/EdX 600x/MassBay CS270 course. This hybrid course taught computer science in Python with an emphasis on practical programing applications. While many of my classmates struggled in the early weeks, my previous programing experience with BASIC allowed me to quickly pick up and appreciate the power that Python has. I completed the course with a final percentage grade of 95% even thought the grading scale was so harsh that 80% would have earned an A and only 55% was required to pass.

124=x-(-34) (answer)

As Taylor and Kristen have said, the key to solving this problem is to understand that when you subtract a negative number, you are doing the same thing as adding a positive number, so "-(-34)" is the same as +34. The two ways I suggest you remember this are: 1) Visually: when...
