To all prospective students and their families,
I am a certified teacher in Maryland. My field of study in college was Early Childhood Education and Upper Elementary Education. I began my teaching experience in the early '80's as a classroom teacher in a public elementary school.
Since that time I have had many other teaching positions/opportunities. I have run summer camps at all levels (pre k through high school). I home schooled my son through 5th grade using an eclectic approach. I have taught classes at a home school co-op ranging from poetry, cooking, group and individual tabletop games, drama games, seasonal crafts and community service projects.
I was a site director for 4 years at a local elementary in a before and after school child care program. Assisting students with their homework was one of my many duties.
I have worked for my local public school system for over 8 years. First as a teacher in an extended school day program (until the grant money ran out) and secondly as a home/hospital teacher. In this last named position, I work one-on-one with students who are not able to attend regular school classes due to illness/injury. These sessions are conducted in the homes of students. They ranged in grades from kindergarten through high school. This current school year I have been tutoring two high school, homeschooled students.
All students feel good about themselves when they succeed. I believe it is the job of the teacher to find out the student's learning style and start planning the course of study from there. The more involved the child is in his/her own learning activities and the more the child understands why something is important to his/her own life, the greater the interest in learning and the more self pride the child will have with his/her accomplishments.
