Accounting
I will assist students in introductory accounting classes. I can help with understanding accounting vocabulary, t-sheets, financial statement preparation and analysis, introductory cost accounting, and managerial accounting.
ACT English
I help students understand the English portion of the test, including how to determine sentence errors, strengthen sentence structure and order paragraphs. Time is also spent helping students understand vocabulary in context, as well as in expanding vocabulary knowledge. If the student elects to include the ACT with writing, I teach students how to design and develop an effective essay.
ACT Reading
I help students understand how to read and analyze the four portions of the SAT reading section: English, Social Studies, Science and the Humanities. Attention is given to developing reading comprehension skills, discerning the answers in multiple choice questions, and pacing work throughout the sections. Students with special needs are taught various test taking strategies to help them, particularly if they have trouble retaining information in the passages. Students are taught efficiency aids to ensure they will accumulate the most points possible in this section. If the student has elected to take the ACT writing portion, time is also given to practicing the essay portion of the exam.
American History
I tutor for the general---as well as AP---U.S. History courses, helping your child master content from pre-Columbian American through contemporary times. For those who are A.P. bound, I will also help you master the art of the DBQ and the other types of essays likely to appear on the exam. I provide strategies for managing time and content in the exam. I am certified in teaching A.P. U.S. History by the College Board, which prepares and administers the A.P. exam.
Business
As a Harvard MBA, I have been specifically trained in all aspects of business management: accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, strategic planning, business strategy development, competitive analysis and business system design. I can help you any of these topics. I am particularly skilled at helping students master the case study method of teaching.
Career Development
I offer two types of career counseling: general job search services and career training specifically for teachers.
For general job search I provide resume writing and design, cover letter composition assistance, and interview practice.
For teachers, I offer those same general services as well as PRAXIS preparation, lesson plan training and classroom management techniques. I am experienced in coaching and counseling teachers. I am especially good at helping teachers that are new to AP teaching develop class room delivery skills and lesson planning for the AP English, History, and Government and Politics.
I managed the student services department of the National Air and Space Museum to provide high school and college internships, school partnerships and other intensive study opportunities for students and teachers seeking academic enrichment.

I produced a Wye River-Aspen Institute conference on revitalizing national standards for public policy graduate education, with specific emphasis on teaching the impact of non-profits and the private sector in public service delivery. The deans of the nation's top ranked public policy schools attended the conference, as well as leading representatives of government, non-profit organizations, the National Association of Public Administrators and the Council for Excellence in Government. Curriculum was used to help establish career skills needed for public policy students.
College Counseling
I work with students to develop a college profile, select the right courses, time and prepare for standardized testing, essay writing and selection of courses for colleges. I am there to guide students and their families through each part of the process, providing assistance as needed and serving as a liaison between the family, high school and the prospective colleges.
Economics
I tutor only for the introductory survey course in Economics, often referred to as Econ101. While I teach the calculations of basic economic indicators (GDP, GNP, etc), my primary emphasis is on helping students understand economic theory, introductory economic concepts (the firm, demand curves, calculation of economic indicators, etc) and the theories of leading historical economists who have influenced how economics should be used for policy formulation. Thus I teach economics more as a social science and policy tool than as a mathematical field. Therefore I am best tutoring those who are being taught by teachers and professors with this orientation toward economics.

I tutor for the general American Government class as well as AP U.S. Government and Politics and A.P. Comparative Government and Politics courses. I am very strong in the teaching of the toughest parts of the U.S. Government and Politics exam: constitutional underpinnings for our government, federalism, political beliefs and behavior, and the Supreme Court and its cases. For those who are A.P. bound, I will also help you master the art of the FRQ---free response question---the only type of essay on this exam. I am certified in teaching A.P. Piano
I have studied piano since the third grade. My study includes the Michael Aaron piano course through the third grade book (beginning of classical composition), Carl Fischer series and various blues music books. I am experienced in gospel music, blues and jazz. My skill set makes me able to teach beginning piano to elementary children. If I were teaching the child my plan would be as follows:
Beginning students
1)Introduce students to the piano staff, treble and bass clefts and the notes that go with them
2) Orient the student to the names of the notes, their placement within the clefs and on the piano keyboard, beginning with the key of C major.
3) Teach students correct piano posture and fingering.
4) Use the numbered fingering technique to get students comfortable with reading music---they will learn the notes and the correct fingering associated with playing each note.
5) Introduce students to rhythm and count signatures
6)Introduce students to measures, rests, repeats, and other symbols within the staff
7)Introduce students to notation---how to identify notes and know the rhythms associated with each
8)Introduce students to chords
9) Use a music book that helps students build complexity of play
10) Explain musical interpretation and Italian terminology
12)Ensure students can recognize and play the major keys and play their scales
Intermediate students
1)Teach more advanced chord notation including inverted chords and dominant seventh
2)Introduce more complex timing and rhythmic notations. Students will learn sixteenths, 2/2 time, syncopation, appogiaturas and other nuances of note usage.
3)Expand the complexity of music the student plays. Introduce more challenging right and left hand compositions.
4) Teach the student arpeggios.
5) Teach the student modulation.
6) Teach the student to begin to play modified versions of complex classical compositions.

Reading
I work to help students improve their ability to comprehend what they read, to glean the key points from text and to be able to write about what they have read in prose that is lucid and builds a clear and compelling argument. I also help students be able to read fiction and poetry and explicate the material. I provide relevant contextual information to help students understand difficult and challenging writers. In this regard, I prepare students with an eye toward the types of classroom assignments and standardized tests they will ultimately face related to reading. I have taught AP English Literature and Composition, and am a former journalism advisor.
SAT Reading
I will thoroughly prepare your child for the critical reading, writing and essay portions of the SAT. This includes a review of your child's performance on the test for a customized plan of study. I can work with the student one-on-one or for those who need lower costs, in a small group session of no more than 5-10 children. Contact me for details. The classes are now registering for the fall SATs.
SAT Writing
The essay is one of the hardest portions of the SAT and one that is 1/3 of the writing score. I understand the writing style needed for this essay and will help your child learn the critical steps needed to lift their SAT essay score. I can work with your child one-on-one or in a small group setting (no more than 5-10 children). Techniques learned for the SAT will help your child with future writing assignments in all classes, particularly AP essays.
Spanish
I work best as an introductory Spanish tutor for those new to the language. I work well with elementary and middle school children, using the best materials and workbooks to help young children learn the language. For high school students, I can help with the reading of challenging Spanish texts in the original language and in conversing to build fluency.
Vocabulary
Help high school students build vocabulary with exercises, games and drills. Excellent preparation for standardized testing.
World History
I am Certified by the College Board to teach A.P. World History. I can help kids with survey courses, preparing Document Based Questions, Change over Time and Compare and Contrast essays that are standard on the exam. I am able to teach both world chronology and the themes associated with the A.P. test. Particular research and teaching focus on Africa, the Middle East, and China. World History can be an overwhelming and difficult course to master if the student's teacher does not understand the nuances of the exam; I am very skilled in helping students master both the test taking skills and content competencies associated with the test.
Writing
Help students with all forms of writing: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, five-paragraph essay, thesis development and argumentation. Can also help with journalistic writing (reporting and opinion), writing for broadcast, storyboarding and speechwriting.
