I am certified by the State of Maryland to teach Spanish, Latin, French, and ESOL! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Towson University with a Bachelors in Modern Foreign Languages. I studied in Cuzco, Peru and Valencia, Spain, worked in Spain and Italy, and have traveled to over a dozen countries. Don't let that fool you though - I am qualified and excited to teach many subjects beyond languages and at ALL levels pre-K through adult!
I absolutely adore teaching and tutoring. For me, it all started when my high school principal called me at 15 years old. She asked if I could tutor an older student in Latin. He had failed miserably and needed someone to help him pass over the summer. We worked together and he raised his grade 70 points, to finish with a B. That student is now successfully pursuing a challenging degree a very prestigious school in the North East.
To be able to teach effectively is a gift that I choose to support with continual research, a strong skill set, and a personal dedication to each of my students. I love what I do and try to be as flexible as possible. Even if there is something you may be concerned about (i.e. pricing, distance), if you feel you would like to have me as a tutor, please contact me today.
I have tutored in math, science, social studies, Latin, Spanish, reading, writing, spelling, and study skills for K-6th. I am currently certified to teach in the State of Maryland. I have numerous letters of recommendation written pertaining to my elementary level tutoring which I would be happy to furnish if necessary. I have also taken Reading and Writing Courses directly related to the elementary grades while pursuing my Master of Education degree at the College of Notre Dame.
I have worked with students in Elementary Math for almost a decade and truly believe there is always a way to communicate any particular concept. Many of my students enjoy the games we play or creative activities we do together and don't even realizing we are practicing Math at all. Yet the skills they gain are undeniable. One of my most recent elementary students scored a 100% on three Math exams in a row, to the complete shock of everyone - except myself. I believe in my students' abilities and in my own. Added together, they equal success.
I have my teaching certification endorsement in ESOL and have taken several ESOL courses and professional developments outside of the endorsement. I currently hold a position as a foreign language educator AND a bilingual interventionist in which I work to incorporate best ESOL practices while respecting my students' diverse native languages, cultures, customs, and beliefs.
I have worked with ESOL students and families from Kindergarten through adult and really enjoy it. I have also begun tutoring for the TOEFL exam which is a wonderful experience for me and for my students! I have taught students from Asian, Hispanic, European, Middle Eastern, and African countries.
Outside of the United States, I have taught English in Peru, Spain, and Italy.
I have a great amount of experience working with students with special needs. Before I even entered a public school classroom, I helped students with a range of disabilities and challenges achieve success in subjects ranging from English to Math to Latin. Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger's Syndrome, are among the many disorders and disabilities I have been able to help students overcome in terms of their learning. As a public school educator, I have learned a great deal more through coursework and professional developments taken in Special Education, and have also successfully incorporated a long list of modifications and accommodations in my practice.
Teaching study skills is an essential part of all of my tutoring sessions, regardless of subject. Effective study skills begin with the identification of learning style - whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. I help students to understand what each type and combination of types mean and then work with them to understand how to utilize this knowledge to the best of their abilities. I also subscribe to Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and have done quite a bit of both academic and action research on this topic. I am able to quickly shift the content of a tutoring lesson into a different "intelligence vehicle" in order to bring clarity to the student. Then, I always make sure the student understands what I did and how he or she can do the same on his or her own.
I have utilized everything from highlighters and Post-It notes to graphic organizers and agendas, finger drawing in sand to writing raps for high school science. It is essential that students not only learn their content, but how to continue to advance as a learner. Other vital elements that I both explicitly and implicitly teach my students are time management, prioritization, motivation and reward, and advocacy.
I have worked as a journalist, copywriter, editor, proofreader, ghostwriter, and in several other writing capacities with great success. In addition to working with children of all ages, I have also worked with college students (both American and international), graduate students in many diverse programs, and even professionals in law, medicine, human resources, education, and small business. I am always thrilled to help others find the right words and convey their messages.
Excellent tutor! Excellent! — I started looking at Wyzant for my 12 year old son in June 2012. He needed help with reading. Liana was my first "pick" with Wyzant. She was very prompt in her reply, but she was not available. Liana suggested I contact her later in the summer. I am so glad I waited! She individualized the lessons, and changed them accordingly. There was one time when my son was just not in the mood for tut ...
