Science and math can be intimidating to some students, but they also have the potential to be exciting and fun. A little patience, creativity, and receptivity on the part of a tutor can make a struggling student confident and successful.

In both mathematics and science, I work with students to create a picture of the whole that they are responsible for understanding. From there we study specific examples and details, creating connections that again tie into the entire unit. I pay attention to the student's response as we work through concepts and adapt my teaching style to fit their needs.

Often my experience over the past five years has been that students struggle with certain subjects not because of an inherent inability to do well, but rather because they have never been taught or have never adopted appropriate organization and study skills. I pass on organization and study strategies to students that have worked well for me in the past.

Most importantly, I want to bring out curiosity and enjoyment in students for these subjects. By weaving games, art, and real world connections into my tutoring sessions, I try to instill a love for learning into students to inspire them in their future studies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I excelled at my studies of Organic Chemistry in college, so much so that my professor asked that I serve as his course mentor the following year. As both a course mentor and tutor for organic chemistry, I worked with students in one-on-one and group settings. Organic Chemistry is a subject that many students struggle with, and I find the main reason for this is that the quantity of information is overwhelming. I help students by mapping out the big picture of how all the different reactions fit together, before moving onto individual reactions.
