Are you looking for an experienced tutor? Do you want to learn more and be excited about learning? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you should consider me for a tutoring position.
My qualifications include a total of five years experience as a classroom teacher, a reading resource teacher and a Title I reading teacher. I received an Education Specialist degree in Reading Education at the University of Virginia in May, 2008. In addition to this, I have a current K-6 Elementary Certification and I hold a current K-12 Certification as a Reading Specialist in the District of Columbia.
My education at the University of Virginia also prepared me for this position. During this program of study, I examined research-based literacy, instructional strategies and analyzed the instructional approaches of the NCLB legislation. I also tutored a struggling reader during a six week summer practicum, in which we used these strategies and instructional approaches to assess and instruct the student in reading, spelling and vocabulary development.
During my time as a Title I teacher, I developed and implemented personal instruction plans for each of my students. In this position, I also collaborated with classroom teachers to deliver content specific instruction that aligned with the school standards and the teacher’s lesson plans. Moreover, I participated in professional development workshops in which I modeled reading lessons for colleagues.
Additionally, I not only increased students’ test scores, but I also instilled in them a love of learning. The students came to my classroom as reluctant readers and left at the end of the school year excited about reading. Their determination and my unwavering commitment to their academic achievement allowed them to have a successful school year.
In addition to my qualifications and experiences, I can offer something unique. I have worked in large urban school systems, where I have encountered children, teachers and parents from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, I have taught in schools in both affluent and low-income neighborhoods. These experiences have allowed me to cultivate my teaching skills in very challenging circumstances. As a result of this, I feel very prepared to face any situations which are presented to me.
I would like to apply these talents and skills to a tutoring position. Realizing, however, that this information only touches briefly upon the information I would like to provide, I would enjoy discussing this opportunity with you personally at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I look forward to speaking with you soon.
