Hello,

My name is Perry B., and I am a certified high school and middle school math teacher and a certified special educator. I have been teaching for the last five years. My prior career has been in information technology.

I like to make the subject fun and less intimidating for my students.

I understand how to relate to students and bring real world experience into my math lessons. This has been especially useful with the implementation of Common Core Standards for algebra 1.

I recently obtained my master's degree in education from Belmont University. I am a Fellow of "The New Teacher Project" a national organization known for their highly selective recruitment and training of teachers.

I have a passion for helping students learn and succeed. I believe my ability to relate math concepts to simple real-world problems takes the anxiety and mystery out of learning that some students may have developed.

If you hire me, you can be sure that I will listen to your goals and needs, and develop a specific plan that is based on your goals and the student's learning style. I am an expert at selecting and applying learning and teaching strategies that are researched based and peer reviewed. My students always learn because of my patient and thorough approach which always connects to their prior knowledge as our base. A specialty of mine is working with students with ADHD and learning difficulties.

Look forward to hearing from you and I wish you the best with your child's education.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am certified as a tutor/coach in ACT Math prep. Given all the high stakes exams that my students need to take and pass, I have developed many "test taking" strategies. I help my students with concentration techniques and their ability to stay focused, in addition to content evaluation of the problem.

ADD/ADHD

I have a master's degree in Special Education (2011) and have worked as a Special Educator for the last 4 years.

I have specific training in teaching and tutoring students with ADHD, both at a graduate level and through 4 years of professional development.

I know what strategies work best with most students with ADHD, but since every child is unique, my initial assessment will guide my approach. I have found that often the best way to learn how a student learns best, is to just ask them!

I also have a child with ADHD and through specific learning strategies she was able to excel in school and now is a lawyer.

Algebra 1

Phonics

I have a Masters degree in Special Education and Teaching. I am a certified teacher and Highly Qualified (under NCLB) to teacher all subjects K-9. A large part of my training was working with students with reading problems and I would take them through the whole process of phonological awareness, which phonics is just a part of.
