I am Brien K., a substitute teacher with over 5 years' experience with Montgomery County Public Schools, and am a Maryland certified secondary social studies teacher.

I'm an excellent writer and editor, and can improve writing and research skills for all age levels. I have a multicultural family, and have extensive experience improving the English language skills of ESOL students, from improving the vocabulary skills of primary grade students to editing masters theses.

As a history and politics buff, I enjoy the inner workings of government and the political process. I have also lived in France and am fluent in French. Students needing help in either history, government or French will find that I am knowledgeable, understanding and enthusiastic.

I have worked extensively with students from the upper primary grades through high school. I have also worked with many college undergraduates needing assistance with writing and major projects.

If you are looking for a skilled and experienced tutor, one who is patient and encouraging, please give me your full consideration. Thank you.

I am conversationally fluent in French, having lived with a French family in Annecy, France. I attended College des Barattes in Annecy-le-Vieux. I travel frequently to France, I love teaching French, and can make clear the basics of grammar and syntax, and can assist students with their conversational skills.

The French-speaking world extends well beyond the borders of France, and francophone countries and cultures are very much worth exploring. I am happy to assist those who wish to master this wonderful language.

I love geography. The study of geography can be a great deal of fun, and its impact on history, politics, economics and the other social sciences is huge.

I'm not the only one who finds the study of geography very rewarding. Human geography and Mandarin Chinese are the two fastest growing AP exams, in terms of the number of students taking the tests each year.

In addition to having taken a few undergraduate courses in geography, I have traveled to about two dozen countries, and have made yearly trips to the Middle East for about the last 30 years, and almost that many to destinations in Europe.

Any student can better appreciate the world in which we live with an understanding of geography. Geography can be more than a list of names to affix to a blank map, or a list of state capitals. I will work with a student to develop the skills that will enable him or her to enjoy this wonderful subject.

As a teacher I have corrected hundreds of papers. I have also coached regular and ESOL students at the middle and high school as well as undergraduate levels. I know the difficulties students can encounter.

Students need to be encouraged. I have worked with many young people who have difficulty writing, or who simply expect to improve their work. Writing skills learned today will help a student with self-expression throughout his academic life and beyond.

I enjoy writing and do a great deal of it. I have written speeches and reports for nonprofit agencies and have had many letters to the editor published. I have also edited masters theses.

I will always seek to meet the student's expectations, as well as those of his or her parents. I will accomplish this always with challenging but reasonable goals, along with plenty of encouragement and a positive attitude. As needed, I will also ask permission to speak to a student's teacher, so that we may all work together to achieve the goals we share.
