I'm trained for one-on-one communication through my MA in Counseling. I'm also a certified "teach English to speakers of other languages" instructor (CELTA:160 hours) with over four years of experience teaching ESL in South Korea and the United States. And I have more than 200 hours of experience tutoring ESL and TOEFL through WyzAnt. Concerning education I have a BA, MA, and am currently working on a second MA which includes learning classical Hebrew and Koine Greek. Additionally, I have a lot of experience with people from cultures outside of America. I lived abroad in Germany, South Korea, Spain, and Mexico for more than eleven years and visited around 24 countries. I have also taught students from 20 countries: Ethiopia, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Denmark, Poland, France, Guatemala, Bolivia, Columbia, Brazil, Russia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and Mongolia. I would also love to help you with learning English and doing well on the TOEFL.

“A few modern philosopher’s assert that an individual's intelligence is a fixed quantity, a quantity which cannot be increased. We must protest and react against this brutal pessimism.... With practice, training, and above all, method, we manage to increase our attention, our memory, our judgment and literally to become more intelligent than we were before.”

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I've taught ESL in South Korea and the United States for around a total of 6 years. My students have ranged from pre-school to a Catalan woman in her 60's. If you would like help adjusting to life in America, I can help you with conversational English, practicing for a job interview, and any other language or cultural issue you may be facing here. And I know a bit of what you're going through -- I lived as a foreigner in South Korea for 5 years, as well as 5 years in Germany. It would be my pleasure to make your time here easier.

Fitness

I grew up as a military brat in the U.S. Army where being fit secured employment. In this environment I embraced an active lifestyle. At the age of 13 I started studying body-building, bought my own weight set, and experimented with my diet. Eventually my routine included stretching, running, and lifting weights. I have been a regular now for over two decades, having the experience and research behind me to stay in shape and help others reach their fitness goals.

My regimen can help you build bulk and strength, but my goal overall is health and fitness. My hope is to instill in you principles that will help you lose 5 pounds during the summer, but also experience more vitality for the rest of your life. Because I know what it is like to be tempted by inactivity after a hard day's work, or impulse eating, night eating, and have fought these cravings myself, I can help you be accountable to a higher standard of living in the modern world. With assisted self-discipline you can improve how you look, feel, and perform in everyday life with more energy, range of motion, and power.

Literature

I taught English Literature as an ELL class at Montrose Christian school in Rockville, MD, for a semester. I used a textbook published by Penguin which provided an anthology of Classic English texts. While Literature may seem like a bore to most, according to Dr. Marilyn Jager Adams it is a major key in improving one's vocabulary and verbal skills, which are very useful in today's Information Age.

Phonics

I was taught the International Phonetic Alphabet while studying for the CELTA certificate. I used phonics in the last year in order to help teach Chinese adults and a Russian boy how to read English.

TOEFL

I use Bruce Stirling's method: "Scoring Strategies for the TOEFL iBT." TOEFL is based on the Classical Greek foundation of arguments. Whether it's Listening, Reading, Speaking, or Writing an argument is present formally or informally. Therefore, my approach to teaching TOEFL scoring strategies is to enable the pupil to either anticipate an argument structure in Listening and Reading, or to create an argument for the Speaking and Writing sections. The better you are at this basic principle, the more likely you will be able to understand or express complex arguments, which will in turn enhance your overall score. My latest student has already reported improvement in her score and I hope to do the same for you if you're interested in hiring me.
