I have been working with students from birth through middle school for 8 years. I have formally taught students in 6th, 3rd, 1st, and Pre-K settings. I have also privately tutored, including tutoring a student to help him reach his IEP goals.
I believe in a hands-on approach to education and I therefore use hands-on and visual materials whenever possible. It is important for a teacher/tutor to understand and relate to her students and I make every effort to teach content using subject matter that the student is interested in. I have worked in a special education inclusion classroom and understand that students develop at different rates. I take students from their current level and help them move forward. I have used Fountas and Pinnell reading levels, as well as Words Their Way, which promotes natural progression of spelling, using the student's strengths, rather than a random list of words.
Additionally, I have worked with students who require enrichment. I like to use experiential and interactive learning as well as discussion to promote higher-order thinking. I want my students not to know something by rote, but rather understand WHY it is. I see myself as a facilitator, facilitating instruction to bring students to higher levels.
