I have done tutoring both as a private tutor and an independent contractor. In the former case, I directly contact parents and through them meet with their children and discuss issues concerning academic matters. After exchanging relevant ideas, I conduct a small survey by inviting students to take a test designed to their grade levels. Based on the result, grade report, and parents' input, I make a recommendation concerning the tutorial need of the student. Once we reach an agreement on the proposed recommendation, I design a tutorial strategy and prepare schedules that would fit the student, parents, and the tutor. In the latter case, I strictly follow instructions given by the tutorial company. The company that I worked for is known as The Enrichment Center located in Bethesda, Maryland. In both cases I have tutored students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and all of the students are between age level 6 to 17. The subject areas that I tutor are math, science, social studies, and English.
My tutorial approach is based on two way communication between the tutor and the student. My primary focus is to help the student complete his or her homework or project in a timely manner. I encourage students to ask questions at any time. I also follow an instructor's problem solving methodologies so that the student can easily follow up the logical steps effectively. In the case of math, I expect students to show their work clearly before they arrive at a solution. That way, they can solidify their understanding of mathematical concepts and apply those concepts to solve real life issues. As far as terminologies are concerned, I require students to define them in their own words and give examples. I try all my best to show up on time and use allocated time as effectively as possible. In some cases, upon the request of the parent, and if I find it necessary, I contact teachers in order to find a better way of helping the student.
