I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with you to help you reach your potential!
This past year I taught 5th grade boys part time in a private school in Owings Mills. However, I decided it was important to spend more time substitute teaching in the public schools, which also increases my availability for tutoring and I am therefore currently substitute teaching full time.
I teach in Baltimore and Howard County Public Schools. This has allowed me to work with students of all ages in grades pre-K through eight.
I earned my Master's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland and became a certified elementary teacher in the state of Maryland in 2010. I will soon be certified to teach middle school math.
I began tutoring students while in high school. I tutored one fourth grade math student. The one-on-one experience was great for this student and for me because I was able to learn some wonderful methods and she received the extra attention she so desperately needed.
In college I branched out. I joined America Reads America Counts to tutor fourth grade students at Calverton Elementary School (Prince George's County in Maryland) in math twice a week. They learned math through games and activities provided by myself and the other tutors, worked in our small group to finish the homework they had for that night, and took turns answering math problems and learning from one another.
While in college I also taught Greek Mythology twice a week as part of an after-school program at Chillum Elementary School in Prince Geoerge's County in Maryland. We read stories, watched videos, learned songs, did art projects, and performed re-enactments of stories from Greek mythology.
I continued on to earn my Master's in Elementary Education at University of Maryland. While there I taught full time in a fifth grade classroom with my mentor teacher. We worked in small groups of 4 or 5 students to learn math, science, and social studies in fun new ways through games, worksheets, calendar math, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and computer games. I also taught grammar, spelling, writing and reading lessons through group projects, skits, videos, and peer work. I gave students examples of good writing and taught them how to improve their own writing through the use of graphic organizers and good words and phrases.
I believe that learning should be as fun and exciting as possible for children. I therefore spend the first ten minutes or so of the first lesson getting to know a student and telling him/her a little about myself. That way I know how to focus the rest of that lesson and future lessons to best help my students learn. This is especially helpful when tutoring students in reading, because the more interested a person is in the topic at hand, the more able (s)he is to focus and gain from a lesson.
Choose me as your child's tutor and I will be sure to do my best to help him/her reach his/her goals.
