Explore tutoring with a knowledgeable, caring tutor with 15 years of experience, who has successfully worked with students in all areas of language and the humanities, including writing, editing, study skills, reading, public speaking, accent reduction, speech communication, social science, and history.
I also provide specific, individualized tutoring for test preparation including TOEFL, SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, AP English Literature, AP English language, GRE, and Praxis. Students I've tutored have often scored in the top 95% of those taking the tests, but there is no magic to tutoring.
What any good tutor should do is understand how the STUDENT perceives a subject, and understand why he or she has trouble with a particular question or topic. When students can understand what is causing them to make errors, a good tutor should discern why they're making the errors, and find strategies to re-think the questions, so as to answer them correctly. This is also great for building motivation.
Whether you are in middle school or graduate school, or a professional seeking improvement in skills at your job, you can be sure that I will listen to your goals and needs, and develop a specific plan that is based on YOUR goals and YOUR learning style.
Besides teaching and tutoring, I've worked for test development organizations, and helped design sections of the GRE test. As a result, I know how tests are created, and what test developers do to lead students to the WRONG answer. Test developers include little 'tricks' to fool students. Why would they do that? Simple. If everyone got high scores on standardized tests, then schools wouldn't have an easy way to choose students. That's why they pay the testing companies: to do the work for them, so they don't have to do it themselves, since that would require REAL time and effort.
My educational background includes a Ph.D. from New York University in Education and an M.A. from Columbia University. Another aspect of my tutoring is helping students with their Masters' theses or Doctoral dissertations. In the past two years, I've helped graduate students with projects in English, Education, Linguistics, Theology, Psychology, sociology, and Latin American Studies.
With a certificate in counseling psychology, and experience with both young people and adults, I can help develop learning strategies for students that don't fit neatly into a typical student profile, for example, those with ADHD or dyslexia.
