Knowledgeable, caring tutor with 20 years of experience, and author of four books on teaching. I've helped students of all ages in language arts, the humanities, and social science, including writing, editing, study skills, reading, public speaking, accent reduction, speech communication, and history.
I also provide individualized tutoring for test preparation including TOEFL, SAT, ACT, SSAT, GRE, AP English Literature and AP Language, GRE, and Praxis. Students I've tutored have often scored in the top 95% percentile, but this isn't achieved by magic (although it would be nice if it could).
A good tutor understands how the student perceives a subject, and develops an insight into how to help him or her with a particular topic. When you understand how to tackle a subject and make it interesting, you can often learn to "tutor yourself." This is great for learning and for building motivation.
Whether you are in middle school or graduate school, or a professional seeking improvement in skills at your job, you can be sure that I will listen to your goals and needs, and develop a specific plan that is based on your goals and learning style.
In addition, I've worked for test development organizations. As a result, I know how tests are created, and what test developers do to lead students to the WRONG answer. Test developers include little 'tricks' to fool students.
My educational background includes a Ph.D. from New York University and an M.A. from Columbia University. Another aspect of my tutoring is helping grad students with their masters theses or doctoral dissertations. In the past two years, I've helped students with projects in English, education, public health, linguistics, theology, psychology, sociology, and Latin American Studies.
With a certificate in Counseling Psychology, and experience with both young people and adults, I can help develop learning strategies for students that don't fit neatly into a typical student profile, for example, those with ADHD or dyslexia.
