I am Special Education trained teacher for grades K-12-Adult. I attended the University of MD and have a B.S. degree in Special Education. I am a certified ESL/ESOL tutor with the Montgomery County Literacy Council in Rockville, MD and an Accent Reduction Trainer with ELT (Executive Language Training), Lake Bluff, IL.

I have experience tutoring ADD and ADHD and approach tutoring using an Executive Function Skills focus to work with students in math, reading, science, social studies and other academic areas. I am very committed and involved with the learning process and the progress/success of the students whom I tutor. Several of my tutees have improved their GPA and/or made the honor roll. I have helped students improve and strengthen academic weaknesses, build self-confidence and establish good study skills and habits.

Vocabulary

I have student define and state use and importance of vocabulary. The student is then introduced to: Root, Prefix and Suffix and shown how to use them to get word meanings.

Reading

My approach to teaching reading is to first teach the sound of the various combination of letters. I then use phonics to teach reading and spelling to grades K-12-Adult. I am a certified ESL/ESOL/TOEFL Tutor. I received my certification and training from the Literacy Council of Montgomery County in Rockville, Maryland. My background is in Education and Telecommunications. I have a B.S. degree from the university of Maryland in Special Education and 15+ years in Telecommunications. I have successfully tutored students from: Russia, South Korea, China and South America; all who have taken and passed the TOEFL, TESAL and TESOL tests.

Phonics

I have used and still currently use phonics to teach reading and spelling to grades K-12-Adult. In my approach to teaching phonics, I use: the alphabet, letter recognition, consonant blends, vowels, word decoding, digraphs and chunks to develope a foundation for word construction and recognition. I incorporate the use of oral, video and audio presentation to demonstrate and illustrate phonic sounds and shapes. I then have the student connect sounds to letters, then letters to words.

Study Skills

I have taught students how to develop effective study skills to improve: reading comprehension, time management, exam preparation, vocabulary, test taking strategies, listen skills and note taking. I have helped students focus on ways to avoid and deal with TEST ANXIETY. The students I have taught have improved their performance in school and learning ability.

I am a Special Education Teacher with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland. I have done private tutoring in: Math, Science, English, Reading and Writing. I have worked with Special Needs clients at Duckworth (Prince Gorge's County, MD), LEAP (Silver Spring, MD), Springbrook and J. F. Kennedy Senior High Schools (Silver Spring, MD) and Cheltenham Center, Cheltenham, MD. I teach from grades K-12-Adult.
