As an enthusiastic and highly experienced educator, it has been my privilege to work with students of all ages on many different subjects in a wide variety of settings. Helping each of them to succeed has given me great satisfaction, and I would very much like to work with you to help you meet your educational goals.
Some of my particular strengths include creative approaches to solving problems, patience, and intuitive understanding of the stumbling blocks to successful learning faced by a particular student.
My teaching experience has included individual, small group, and whole class lessons in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), basic literacy for adults, English writing in the workplace, Hebrew, and all elementary school subjects. In addition, I have also been the principal of a supplementary school and summer camp unit head.
One qualification, however, does not come either from my formal training or my years of teaching experience. Instead, it comes from being the parent of a very bright child with attention problems and learning disabilities. Now a college graduate with a professional degree, he taught me never to give up on anyone and that anything is possible with perseverance and the right help.
I look forward to working with you.
Upon graduation from the University of Rochester, I held a teaching license from the State of New York for grades K - 6. As part of that degree, I student taught in a fourth and a sixth grade classroom. Part of my teaching experience was in a public elementary school, and I worked with that age group in the supplementary school of which I was principal for fourteen years.
I lived in Israel for a total of two years, studied at an Ulpan, and have taught Hebrew to both children and adults for more than 30 years.
As part of my ESOL teaching experience (10 years), I have worked with phonics materials both for spelling and pronunciation. In addition, phonics training was part of my original undergraduate degree in education.
As part of my 10 years of ESOL teaching, I have taught many lessons on the proper pronunciation of English. These have included lessons on voiced and unvoiced consonants, the involvement of different parts of the mouth in the creation of sound, and phonics rules for pronunciation. I am cognizant of which sounds are particularly difficult for speakers of certain languages to use correctly and can suggest remedies.
