As a poet, I'd worked in a variety of art-related fields before attending graduate school. I try to incorporate that sort of creative work and thinking into my lessons with students. Recently, I've worked as an academic coach, a writing center coordinator, and as a lecturer in Academic Writing and Creative Writing at a top public university. When I meet with students I try to assess their strengths and weaknesses on a macro and micro level. What this means is that I try to help students develop methods of organization, balanced against formal skills like grammar, diction, and syntax. I find that my techniques help students to approach their writing and reading from a vastly different—and more engaging— perspective than they've likely been asked. My students develop confidence in their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, which often affects their academic and social skills beyond writing. These are skills I teach in all types of tutoring whether for social studies/politics & government, test preparation, or English. I also love to work with students in creative writing—fiction, poetry, and non-fiction.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have experience as a consultant in the Center for Academic Success at the Universities at Shady Grove outside of Washington, DC. As a consultant I've worked with students one-on-one and in group sessions (workshops) regarding course planning, developing motivation techniques, time management, and developing effective study skills and habits.
