I believe that teaching a language is not only to meet students' academic needs but also to coach them to become independent learners with self-learning skills. I provide the appropriate tool/material with practical methods to coach students step by step to gain ability, confidence and motivation for lifetime learning. Most students described my lessons to be fun, efficient, and useful.
My undergraduate study was Foreign Languages and Literature; my graduate degree is MBA. These two backgrounds have brought together for me to continuously research and develop the most efficient Chinese language teaching/learning methodology. I have 20+ years of teaching in the secondary and post-secondary schools as well as private tutoring for children and adults. I specialize in teaching pronunciation/speaking, pinyin typing, character recognition, listening, writing, and test preparations. I am proficient at integrating technology and web 2.0 tools to enhance learning efficiency. My past students have won Chinese karaoke contests, Chinese typing contests (2 typing teams in 2 schools), and calligraphy contests in Metropolitan DC Area; several students' compositions were published on World Journal Chinese Newspaper.
Currently, I work as a translator and an independent Chinese instructor associate with a multi-language company to mostly teach government employees. I offer students modern online tools and my collections of books/maps, authentic cultural items/decoration, and multimedia/software for students' resources. In the past few years, I taught 8th grade Chinese classes in a weekend Chinese heritage school. I was invited to instruct/speak in seminars to demonstrate for some Chinese teachers how to integrate technology to teach Chinese. Before I immigrated to the United States in 1999, I was the second language instructor at the international trade department in a community college in Taiwan. Moreover, I had helped business information translation and interpretation when I worked at Bloomberg, NJ, and cooperated with translation group to develop new Chinese Bloomberg financial information platform.
I can assist K-college students: homework help, test reinforcement, stroke order practice, dictionary usage, typing skills, pinyin chart, stroke order practice, culture understanding, conversation, Chinese AP & SAT, self-learning ability, college exam/project preparation, computer typing Chinese fonts/display set-up.
For adults learners, I can help with pronunciation/fluency enhancement, business letter typing/interpretation, business conversation, level boost, news reading/discussion, language certification preparation, business trip planning, lifetime self-learning ability, computer typing and Chinese fonts/display set-up.
Beside teaching, I provide translation and oral interpretation services. My past works include emails, videos, contracts, academic thesis abstract, magazine, visa application, etc.
