Hello all who may read this:

My name is Javon and I am a graduate of New York University. I was a Music Education major, meaning that my specialties are in music and in educating. I am a certified music teacher, although my knowledge and tutelage spans more subjects than just music. My love of sounds and of people are what drew me to this career. I truly want to help students to grow academically and personally because I believe that that is what school should be for. Since schools don't have the time to foster the growth of the student, that's where I as a tutor come in! I have worked with children since I pretty much was one having been a tutor since I was 14 and a camp counselor since 15. I try to relate as much as possible to each student on a case by case basis to bring out faith, knowledge, and strength that the student did not know that he/she possessed. I also look forward to working with each student's caretaker(s) on what he/she may want to get out of tutoring for the student. I am apt to cover a vast array of topics, graduated NYU magna cum laude, and was on the Dean's List every semester of my secondary schooling career. I scored highly on the SATs and ACTs, have world experience to bring in from my travels throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Japan, and to the UAE. I hope to work with all of you, but since that is physically impossible, I hope that you see me as the proper fit and will work with me, as I will be honored to work with any student who comes my way.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have taken two years of composition lessons through my education and have even had a composition and multiple arrangements performed. My compositions have, thus far, solely been for a capella choir, so if that is where your interests lie, I can help you. I believe that if your music makes sense to you, we can make it make sense to all; music isn't to be pretty, rather it is to express what the composer feels. As such, I would love to help you express yourself.

Ear Training

I am a music education student who took a total of 4 years of ear training between my secondary and post-secondary educations. I am proficient vocally and knowledgeable in other instruments in order to work on ear training with different timbres and in different octaves. I use ear training when working with my choirs in order to help them grasp the music more quickly, so I have practice teaching ear training.

General Music

As a music education major, our primary focus is in how to teach general music. This includes the recorder, the harmonica, basic percussion, basic rhythm, note names, etc. I have completed my curriculum development courses for elementary and secondary music, so I have lessons and ideas in mind for most situations that arise in general music.

Sight Singing

As a music education major, I have studied ear training and sight singing. I am in a choir with an emphasis on sight singing. I teach sight singing by interval and also by solfege so that students have different tools to sight sing based on what makes each student more proficient and comfortable.

Theatre

I have experience as actor, director, stage manager, assistant stage manager, lighting technician, sound operator, follow spot operator, and on the fly rail. With all of those experiences, I believe that I'm able to help with theatre tutoring. I have also worked with an improv troupe, so I can help with improv and theatre games if that is more where the interest lies.

Voice (Music)

I am a music education major with a concentration in vocal and choral studies. As a college student, I have taken five voice students, including a male who is now at New York's premier performing arts high school studying voice and musical theatre. I have been taking voice lessons since 2007. I have also been the musical director of an a cappella group.
