My goal is to help you become familiar with bioinformatics programming and tools. With graduate training in both biology and Computer Science and more than 12 years hands-on experience as a senior bioinformatician, I am well qualified to tutor bioinformatics programming and analysis. My targeted students are biology students/scientists who are learning Perl, Python, Java as their first programming language. I also teach basic Unix/Linux/SQL usage and NextGen sequence analysis tools.

I have taught beginning Perl for Bioinformatics, Introduction to R programming, BioPython, BioJava, Linux, SQL, NextGen sequence analysis including WGS, Exome, RNAseq, microRNA, etc., Affymetrix SNP6 array for Copy Number analysis, and various Bioinformatics tool usage and public bioinformatics databases.

For programming study I focus on helping you to truly understand the programming principle instead of just teaching you the syntax. I am very patient and teach by a lot of examples. My own biology background also help me to understand better where your challenge is and how to conquer it.

For bioinformatics training I use real data from NCBI for hand-on exercises. I can teach the whole end-to-end analysis pipeline (e.g. SNP analysis, de novo assembly) or a particular software.

Finally I can provide project consulting and bioinformatics career advice and interview preparation,

Please contact me of your needs and see how I can best help you. Thanks!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I finished over 40 credits of computer science undergrad and graduate courses with GPA above 3.5 from highly ranked CS program in US and Canada (I can provide transcripts from Arizona State Uni. and Simon Fraser Uni). Since graduation I have been working as a Bioinfromatics software developer for the last 10 years.

Computer Science

I have successfully finished 8 undergrad computer science major courses with a GPA over 3.8 from Arizona State University CS department. 6 of the 8 courses are CS 3rd and 4th year courses. I was accepted to both CS master's degree program of ASU and Simon Fraser University in BC Canada, where I further pursed my graduate study. I finished another 7 graduate CS courses with GPA over 3.5 at SFU. I can provide copies of transcripts upon request.

General Computer

I have finished over 15 college and graduate computer science courses. I am familiar with Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac, Ubunto, both hardware and commonly used software. I know several programming language like Java, Python, Perl, PHP, VB, C++. I also do web and database programming.

Java

I took a Java programming class in Arizona State University Computer Science and got an "A". I also had worked on summer internship projects and graduate network projects using Java. For recent years I have been programming Java in a bioinformatics context to develop pipeline and small programs.

Linux

Besides using Unix/Linux in my undergrad/graduate computer science courses, I have been working in Linux OS for the over 10 years on almost daily basis.

Perl

Besides taking Perl as my programming in my graduate Bioinformatics course, I have been using Perl as my principal programming languages for the past 9 years on almost daily basis.

Python

Have been using Python in Bioinformatics at work for more than 3 years. At my work, it is mainly used in pipeline development in both Windows and Linux environment. I am familiar with BioPython. I have tutored college Python programming in Bioinformatics course.

SQL

Teaching assistant - Senior undergraduate and graduate Database course at Simon Fraser University School of Computing Science. Responsibilities include office hour, leading lab tutorial, grading assignments and projects.

Hands-on database development experience - Have worked on database design and development on Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, and PostgreSQL at work for over 10 years.

UNIX

I learned Unix in my computer science undergraduate and graduate courses. As a bioinformatics software engineer in the past 11 years all the software development had been done on the Linux desktop and cluster environment (Linux Redhat, Sun Grid Engine) . My job also involves software installation and configuration, shell scripting, database management, and virtual machine set up (VMware, Ubunto), all done under Linux/Unix.

Great, Patient Tutor — Jerry is a great tutor. He is patient and tries really hard to help you understand and work out your problem. He understands Python problems really well and simplifies it for you by explaining it several times. I definitely recommend him for tutoring. ...
