I taught elementary school for 17 years in Montgomery County Public Schools, teaching every subject from Language Arts-to-Science and loved every minute of it. I enjoy teaching elementary students as they are like sponges: absorbing every tidbit with which they are presented. In addition, they possess a love of learning which has yet to be diluted by the conformities experienced in middle and high school. They also possess a unique perspective of the world around them, which allows for creativity uninhibited by an adult perspective. My original BS degree was in Education Grades 1-8. Subsequently, I went on to being certified in Reading, English and History through high school.
I have taught the whole gamut of reading,English and writing to reluctant students, students with disabilities, gifted students and IB students. The three blended subjects are my passion.
Teaching history is my passion. It is gratifying to impart a sense of the workings of our contemporary world as it relates to what has gone before our time. I have taught World History, European History, Ancient and American History for many a year and find it exhilarating when the "light goes on" and the significance of our past is related to our present and perhaps future.
Government & Politics
I am a retired MCPS history teacher with wide experience in all phases of the Social Studies curriculum, including American and World History, as well as Government and Politics. In addition, I have experience with all types of learners including the reluctant and the gifted. History is my passion and I enjoy nothing better than imparting the love I have for the subject to my students.
I am able to teach modern Greek, as I am a fluent Greek speaker. I can help children and adults in speaking, spelling, and grammar.
I have taught reading in Montgomery County Public Schools on the elementary and middle schools for a number of years. I have been certified in reading and have taught the gamut of all skill levels, from beginners to accomplished readers and every level in between, including the gifted and those with special needs. My aim is to make reading a fun activity giving students the joy of discovering its wonders.
I have tutored for the SAT in Critical Reading, English grammar and sentence completion, as well as writing for Kaplan. I am also a retired MCPS English and History teacher, having taught all levels in both subjects from Middle to High School. My goal is to impart a sense of language and its manipulation to my students not only to improve their SAT scores, but as life long skills available in their future careers.
I am a retired Montgomery County Public School Educator and have participated in numerous after school study groups, and study skill organizational groups during my tenure of active teaching. My strategies for instilling/teaching study skills include graphic organizers which set the tone: setting priorities, goal setting, student created study plan, calendar to aid in time management for both short-term and long-term assignments. I also have the student create an observation sheet as to how their time is utilized to manage same for optimum educational benefits. It is also important to emphasize the importance of a conducive area for study where distractions do not impede the process.
Learning to use academic vocabulary and mnemonic devices, as well as seriously monitoring homework, are essential strategies. It is also essential to make the student aware of the lecture/information presentation of the instructor/teacher once topic has been introduced: compare/contrast, sequencing events, problem solving, cause and effect. Being aware of these styles is an essential aid to taking notes. Some students work best beginning with a to-do list as they begin the study session; some do best when tackling what they consider the most difficult task first; after that everything seems easier.
