Hi! As a way of introduction, I am a native of this area who graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington in 1970. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton with a BA in history and minors in English, Theology, and Philosophy.
I was a full-time teacher at a private elementary school in the Rockville area until I decided to retire in June of 2012. While at this school, I was a homeroom teacher and taught U.S. history, American literature, English grammar, and vocabulary to both the seventh and eighth grades. In addition, I taught social studies and world history to grades Five and Six respectively during my final two years.
Having experienced too many boring teachers during my own education, I strove to make the classes I taught as interesting as possible. I accomplished this by a combination of methods that kept my students focused and entertained at the same time. Many of my students went on to AP courses in both public and private high schools in this area. I tutored a number of my pupils after school and most did extremely well in upcoming tests or quizzes.
My knowledge is not restricted to U.S. history; I am familiar with many others, (i.e. World, Russian, Central and South American, European, Maryland and Washington, D.C., among others). I am also familiar with English literature as well as American.
I am no stranger to learning disabilities as three of my own seven children suffered from either ADD or the related ADHD. I also taught many students who had these educational hindrances and, with a little extra work and understanding, they did well in my classes.
