Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's degree in elementary education, and worked with another teacher in a 5th grade classroom for a year while earning this degree. While there, I planned and taught lessons in math, science, social studies, reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. I created tests and quizzes for students, as well as games and other learning activities.

I am certified to teach elementary school students in grades 1 - 6, as well as middle school students (grades 4 - 9) in math.

This past year, I taught 2nd grade in Montgomery County, and the prior year I taught 5th grade students.

I also tutored and taught after-school programs while in College. I worked with students in 2nd through 6th grade. We watched videos, read stories and articles, performed re-enactments and role-playing, did projects, and used worksheets to improve students' understandings of the subjects. Learning needed to be fun, especially at the end of a long school day, and so I tried my best to make it fun, but also educational for my students.

Elementary Math

I earned my master's degree in elementary education at the University of Maryland in 2010. I am certified to teach all elementary subjects and middle school mathematics in Maryland. I am currently in the process if earning certification for special education.

As an undergraduate student, I worked with America Counts tutoring student in Prince George's County after-school program twice a week. While studying as a graduate student, I also worked in a 5th grade classroom in Howard County as a student teacher. Since then, I have substitute taught for all elementary and middle school grades in Baltimore, Montgomery, and Howard Counties. This past year, I taught 2nd graders in Montgomery County, and 5th grade the year before that.

Praxis

I took the Praxis I series test in August of 2008 and passed with a 182 on the reading section, 184 on the writing section, and a 188 on the math section (all out of a possible 190). In April of 2009 I took the Praxis 2 Series test for elementary education content knowledge and passed with a 182 out of 200 for which I received a certificate of excellence. I also passed the elementary education content area exercises Praxis test in November of 2009.

I bought a Praxis study guide which I did not personally use much for my own studying, but which others may find useful. I still have it and would be happy to share it with others in need of Praxis help.

Special Needs

While earning my masters degree in elementary education I worked as a student-teach in a 5th grade classroom. My science and social studies class consisted of only below grade level students. The majority of the students were in this class due to poor comprehension and/or fluency. Many were also ADHD.

Although my homeroom class was heterogeneously grouped, a few of my social studies/science students were in this class as well. There was also a student with Aspergers. Working with her daily truly helped improve my understanding of how to work with special needs students.

Study Skills

As a classroom teacher and a substitute teacher part of my job is to help students learn to help themselves. In this way I have had lots of practice teaching study skills to children of all ages.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
