Elementary Teacher for 20 Years: Looking for K-3 Tutoring Any Subject

I have been teaching elementary students for twenty years in Virginia. I recently married and moved to Maryland. I miss working with children and helping students. I am interested in tutoring K-3 students. I have numerous supplies and materials to use for tutoring. I believe students need encouragement and positive feedback. I believe all students have their own way of learning and as a teacher, finding what works best for each child is my job. I enjoy seeing the sparkle in a student's eye when they "get it". I am dedicated and devoted to helping a student when I work with them.

Reading

Teaching reading is a passion of mine. I love to see children progress and become confident readers. When teaching reading, students need to be read to, they need to read with the teacher and they need to read independently. Spelling

I have numerous years experience teaching all subject areas. Spelling is an important subject. Learning spelling patterns carries over to the student's reading and writing.

Elementary Math

I have worked with elementary students in all subject areas. Math is one of my favorites. I enjoy finding unique ways to present and practice math skills. It is important that students get hands on practice with math concepts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a self-contained elementary classroom teacher for 20 years. I taught all subjects including; reading, writing, spelling, math, science, and social studies. I planned my own lessons to meet the needs of my students and to meet state standards. So much of elementary curriculum can be taught through cross-curricular activities. Within a lesson, I try to include several subject areas. My experience and education is my strength in the elementary area.

Phonics

I have 18 years of experience in K-2 classrooms. Phonics and phonemic awareness was a huge part of my everyday teaching. Students who gain the understanding of the letter-sound relationships learn to read and are able to apply this knowledge when they write as well. I have used various methods and strategies and programs during my 18 years to teach phonics. I have an overwhelming amount of materials that I have purchased and created for teaching phonics.

Study Skills

As states are requiring more and more standards based instruction, students are needing to increase their study skills. As students progress through their education, they have to be taught core subjects as well as study skills. Learning how to organize, take notes, highlight key words in questions, and pull all of the information they are given in school to make sense for them is a must. Learning study skills should be incorporated with their everyday instruction.
