I love teaching English. I received a rare opportunity to teach English in Eastern Europe, Poland, over ten years ago. The experienced shaped me and showed me skills I didn't know I had.
I spent six wonderful years teaching English to professionals and learning their language: this reminded me how difficult it can be for some students to learn concepts in English. While learning Polish I was constantly reminded how difficult even basic structures can be wile learning. This understanding gave me a patience some of my colleges had forgotten. I spent another two years in Prague teaching all levels of English before returning to the United States.
During my stay abroad, I was fully independent and in charge of making my own lessons. I quickly discovered that while many teachers had hidden themselves behind books, I could listen to the student and adapt accordingly. While books have their place in any classroom, they should serve to supplement the lesson and not be the lesson itself. I found that if the student is fully engaged, then they will learn more effectively.
I prefer to constantly adapt to the students' needs rather than follow a strict guideline. People are dynamic and learning should be as well. I use a highly communicative method where the student is given opportunities to speak and practice at every stage of the lesson, rather than the lecture-style lessons. I'm friendly and accepting that no two students are alike: some prefer homework nightly, other never; some prefer constant correction, while others prefer less frequent interruption. I aim to adapt to each student individually and enjoy the learning process with them. I'm genuinely excited when a student learns.
I excel in teaching grammar from basic to advanced. Throughout my almost ten year teaching career I have discovered grammar is not a difficult and frightening aspect of language, but rather an intuitive and constructive device to allow us to express ourselves more effectively. I have found ways of introducing and practicing even the most complex grammar in natural ways.
I love what I do.
