I have worked as a Kindergarten teacher for 3 years. The curriculum included teaching alphabet recognition and writing, numbers 1-20 recognition and writing, phonics and reading simple books. When my children reached school age I was very active in helping them with their schoolwork as well as helping in the classroom. I worked with their teachers in creating classroom teaching aids, correcting papers, and working with small groups of students who needed extra reinforcement in reading, phonics, and math. I began tutoring again when my grandsons needed extra help with reading, phonics, and math. I worked with the teachers at Dynard Elementary School in St. Mary's county who provided me with lots of help and resources. I am proud to say my grandsons are now reading well above grade level. I also work as a substitute teacher in the lower elementary grades at Grace Christian Academy.
I really enjoy working one-on-one with students. We work as a team to build on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. I believe learning should be fun and interesting. I try to make each lesson something the student will look forward to instead of dread. I use flashcards, worksheets, games and interesting books to capture and keep my students' interest. I start with the simple basics to instill confidence and then introduce harder material to keep them moving forward. I ask my students to always try their best and use simple rewards to encourage their efforts.
I have had experience teaching simple addition and subtraction and simple multiplication. I have taught students how to write their letters and numbers. I have taught phonics and reading and have had great success in bringing students who are behind up to and beyond grade level.
I teach the ABeka phonics charts to kindergarten and first and second grade students. I teach the sounds of the letters of the alphabet as well as blends, digraphs, and diphthongs using workbooks, games, and flash cards. The student and I work as a team to overcome the difficulties and reach new goals. I use a simple reward system as encouragement and it has worked well.
I use the phonetic approach to reading. We learn the sounds of the alphabet as well as blends, dipthongs, and diagraphs.
I also teach the most common sight words. I also teach word families. This shows the student that by changing one or two
letters they can read and know many more words.
Since I believe children learn better when the work is fun I use games to reinforce the words we are learning. I start below the student's reading level with easier books to instill confidence in the student and then gradually increase the difficulty level to keep them challenged. I also use simple rewards when I feel a student has tried very hard.
