I recently retired from a local private high school. I have taught all math subjects including Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB. I have taught math for 44 years. I have tutored students privately over the last 30 years. When I tutor, I usually meet for one hour. If I find the student is not responding, or has difficulty staying on task, I stop and talk to them about what interests them most. This usually gets them focused and we can continue. Having taught many years, I have many work sheets and other extra outside material to share. I have also taught an SAT prep course for 6 years. Last year, the son of a former student was home-schooled. I had the pleasure of teaching him him one hour per week.
I have taught 44 years and have taught many students with ADD and ADHD. I am presently tutoring a student in Takoma Park with ADHD and a student in Silver Spring with Aspergers. I studied piano from my 2nd grade to my freshman year in college. I took clarinet lessons from 4th grade to high school and 2 years in college. I sang tenor throughout high school and college. I now sing bass in choirs in the DC area. I also have sight singing practice and completed 1 year of music theory.
I have taught geometry for at least 40 of my 44 years of teaching. I find students have a difficult time with geometry because it is a different mindset than algebra. It is not really about memorization so much as visualization of the ideas. That is, it is more about why something is a certain way rather than memorizing ideas.
