COOP/HSPT

I have been prepping students for the HSPT for two years - in particular for the math, the essay, the English usage, reading, and vocabulary sub-sections. This test is similar to the PSAT, the SSAT and the ISEE, in which I have prepared tens of students over the past year with very good results. I have many materials for tutoring each one of these tests, and my clients are free to use them instead of being obliged to buy their own. I prefer Princeton Review Books, but I also have Peterson, Kaplan and Princeton special books for acquiring an exemplary vocabulary. I also maintain accounts on line which allow my students to practice with some excellent drills during part of their lesson, while again not being obliged to subscribe to the service themselves. Some of the strategies I teach for successful test-taking in the SAT system are self-created. I introduce each student to several strategies and we determine which ones work best for them.
As for my personal style, I take the time to explain the tests thoroughly and clearly, the scoring, the advisability of guessing or skipping, the timing of each sub-section, and the types of questions that are apt to appear in any particular section of the particular test being taken. I give clear explanations of why a certain student choice is incorrect. My students learn how to "take a test" and they develop a set of skills which will take them through many years of future standardized testing.
Additionally, we work on interviewing techniques, the essay and what information ought to be covered in it, and the etiquette of interacting with adults in a formal setting such as a school tour or interview.
I would love to work with your son or daughter on the HSPT.

Elementary (K-6th)

My name is Paige S., known as "Miss Paige" to my many students. I love working with all young students of all levels of capabilities on their reading and math. I care about the "whole" student, so I do as much mentoring as teaching. It is by far the most rewarding thing I have done in my long career. I am a certified teacher with Montgomery County Public Schools. I have worked with the No Child Left Behind Program (NCLB-SES -Title One) for two full years as an employee of The Enrichment Centers (TEC), Inc. I have taught reading and math to many elementary and middle school children (ages 4-14) at schools and centers throughout PG County and Montgomery County in this program.

English

As a 10-year high-school and middle school French teacher, I had to teach English grammar and understand our children's problems in critical reading and writing English in order to teach them the rudiments of French. I had to know and teach phonics in order to teach French vowel combinations and pronunciation. I have always loved to read, and worked for 9 years right after college analyzing and writing (300+) articles for a research bulletin in Munich, Germany.

ESL/ESOL

As a former French teacher in High School French, I taught many native French speakers to read and write English as they were advanced French grammar and writing for AP French. Our ESOL students were regularly sent to me for help due to my expertise in teaching foreign languages (I also teach Russian and am certified in Montgomery County Public Schools in. French , Russian and English). I am able to engage students with all kinds of fun strategies and materials I have in my tool bag. Together, an ESOL student and I do creative projects, learn songs, write imaginative assignments and have fun dong role play, putting on puppet shows, creating videos, and much more! This way I am able to build confidence, change work habits, even inspire reluctant learners! Contact me if you want to significantly improve your grasp of English grammar and spoken or written English. I can guarantee significant results, possibly beyond what you think is possible. If you are not getting the grades you want in your classes, I can definitely help you get them - all the while discovering the fun and rewards of learning English as a foreign language.

French

Beginner: Learn to speak many common phrases and become comfortable with the French accent. Watch videos and learn to recognize French words you thought you'd never master! We do small projects that make you interested in using French on the internet. We use flash cards, board games, Jeopardy and Bingo, Slap, and many other games for learning language.

Intermediate: Add to your grammar mastery and growing vocabulary (by topic) by using colorful verbs, adjectives and adverbs in your games. Get a friend to take French with you and exchange opinions, role play, do improve theater and write to pen pals with her or him. Read kids' news in French and listen to kids' news programs.

Advanced: Read French newspapers, journals (in your interest areas)and short stories or modern novels and report and converse about them. Exchange emails with pen pals (totally safe and protected through E-Pals.com) Take field trips - (Impressionist Art exhibit in the National Art Museum -- describe what you see in French; cook French foods while speaking French; play games or watch French soccer matches and "La Tour de France" in French. Conceive your own favorite kind of thematic interactive activity. Even tho you are advanced - you still may play board games and "Pro - Jeopardy" !!!

ISEE

My name is Paige. I have prepared several students for the ISEE in the past two years with very good results. My approach is to first thoroughly explain and illustrate the content of the test, the scoring, the timing of each sub-section of the ISEE, the differences between the SSAT and the ISEE, and several other aspects of the test itself, including the types of traps and pitfalls that the test contains for unprepared students.
Next, we go through many strategies for taking the particular level of the test he/she is taking. I have many materials of my own, which my students are free to borrow, thereby relieving them of the obligation of acquiring these themselves. My preferred preparatory source is the Princeton Review, although I also use Kaplan, Peterson and some specialized work books for reading, vocabulary, analogies and English usage and grammar. My students are requested to make flash cards for math facts and for vocabulary words they have forgotten or never knew. I subscribe to several excellent on-line review sites, which we use from time to time for a change of pace. I encourage the student's parents to help prepare him/her for the test by using "test" vocab in their day to day communication with their son or daughter. Most importantly, I stress that the student take as many full practice tests as possible within the available time before his/her chosen test date. Some parts of the practice tests are taken during lessons. We evaluate errors and develop the best strategies for that particular student for avoiding these errors.
In short, my students take a logical, thorough, clear, step-by-step approach for preparing for their standardized tests and for the other parts of the school application process. My goal to make all my students comfortable with test-taking strategies that fit them and that will assure their success in future years of standardized test-taking. I would love to prepare your son or daughter for this test.

PSAT

I have been specializing in Standardized Test Prep for almost three years. I have made a thorough catalogue of question types in Math, Reading, and English grammar in the PSAT, SAT, ACT and HSPT. I am also very familiar with many other tests. I have collected and created many strategies for recognizing and choosing the "right" answer for any given test. The objective in taking a standardized test is to understand multiple choice testing and to master it before going into the test. It is therefore a very poor idea to go into such a test "cold" without studying. I have a 6-week, a 10 week, and a 15-week curriculum for PSAT prep which can be administered and/or modified to meet any student's needs. I can prepare a student in a shorter amount of time than many group-based prep courses because I spend quality one-on-one time with my students. I make sure their confidence level and endurance for taking a 3.5 hour exam is at its maximum before they encounter the exam. My success rate has been impressive and I would love to work with your son or daughter. Give me a call!

Reading

I have been teaching reading to foreign language students for 10 years and have been tutoring all ages from 3-18 in reading for standardized tests and for school needs. I am well qualified to teach reading to pre-school, elementary, middle school and high school students. My programs include teaching phonics (for which I have great materials), reading for main idea, inference, supporting details, style, diction, author's point of view, voice, and other reading skills. Again, I have the materials that are most effective and most proven. The goal is to make sure a student can learn from what he/she reads - and not simply decode words. Reading with expression, learning effective notetaking techniques, and choosing the right reading environment all help. Perhaps just as importantly, I work with a student on developing a positive attitude toward reading-especially when he says he finds reading "boring", "a waste of time compared to the computer", "too hard," etc. Most importantly of all, I customize my program to the student's needs and his/her preferred and most effective learning style.

Give me a try - you won't be sorry you did!

Russian

I was lucky to have been given the chance to study Russian at my prep school - Kent School for girls. I continued with Russian by taking it as my major at Middlebury College in Vermont. I continued to pursue my passion for Russian by working for Radio Liberty in Munich Germany for many years, speaking and writing Russian every day in my work. Subsequently, I worked in several departments of the U.S. government analyzing Soviet and Post-Soviet affairs, using Russian sources for most of my research.

I take a conversational approach to teaching Russian. My goal is to get a novice student speaking simple sentences within one month of study. We use Total Physical Response, pictures, memory and bingo games, flash cards, story telling and retelling, and lots of improv drama to reinforce short grammar and pronunciation lessons. I identify my client's favorite learning style and go with it. I also give my clients the opportunity to create some parts of their own lessons by choosing topics in which they are interested and exercises which they find engaging. Gradually, a novice student works up to lessons that are 90% immersion. Each student works at his/her own pace.

SAT Reading

I am a retired Montgomery High School teacher certified in English. I have been helping students prepare for the SAT and PSAT and other standard Tests for 2 years. I can help any student improve his score on SAT reading and vocabulary development. I focus on teaching a student to think while reading - making the student aware of the author's focus, point of view, "voice" and purpose. I spot how the student is "decoding" what he/she is reading and then work on helping him/her "think" and "interpret" as he/she reads instead of merely decoding words. We also work diligently on vocab. I have developed texts which contain 1000 of the most common SAT words , so the student sees these words in context. Depending on the student, we also use flash cards or other strategies to memorize SAT vocab.
I'd love to help your son or daughter as I've helped so many already. Give me a try. You won't be sorry!

SAT Writing

Before becoming a certified teacher in Montgomery County, I worked for thirteen years in the U.S. Government - doing research and writing articles for several foreign policy journals. I have written more than 300 articles on the Soviet Union and the former Soviet republics. I love to write informative, expository articles, which our children need to know in order to be marketable in many careers today. I can teach your child how to write the five paragraph essay, but also teach him/her to develop a style through skillful word choice, to appreciate smooth, fluent phrasing, and to get the grammar perfect every time. I know this is a tall order, but the secret is in presenting meaningful examples and in patiently showing a young person how to think deeply before starting to write something, and how to transfer his thoughts to paper. Patience and inspiration - and making it a little bit fun and intriguing are the keys! Give me a try! You won't be sorry.

Spelling

My long background in teaching French, performing research at a Russian institute, and teaching English as a foreign language to ESOL students in high school and middle school has made me an excellent teacher of spelling strategies and techniques. I have my certification in English Literature and Grammar and have been tutoring English phonics, spelling, reading, and writing for almost 3 years with WyzAnt and occasionally in private school programs.

Study Skills

I have taught foreign languages (French and Russian) for ten years in the Montgomery County Public School system. One of my most important and rewarding responsibilities was to help my students with their study and writing skills. Using the Empowered Learning approach, I helped many students learn what style of learner they were by disposition and how to prepare study materials that matched their own most comfortable style. I also demonstrated to my students how to take effective notes in less time by using shorthand and the Cambridge method. I taught them how to make optimal use of their agenda books, and how to prepare for tests using graphic organizers, flash cards, outlines and other study strategies. I have tutored many students on how to perform effective and proper research and how to take notes from original sources. I teach critical thinking in my tutoring, as this is the most important test-taking skill for reading sections of standardized tests. Of course, every student is different. Therefore, much of what I teach in study skills and becoming a Master Student depends on a preliminary evaluation of those aspects of studying, project writing, and test-taking are most challenging to the particular student I am coaching and mentoring. I am thorough, thoughtful, easy to understand and take pride and pleasure in encouraging every student I tutor.

Writing

I have been writing professionally on my job in the foreign economic relations field for 25 years. Now, I love passing on what I learned as I developed as a writer. I always start with how a writer organizes and carries out research and focuses his/her theme. I move on to how to outline the writing project (or assignment). I then teach basic paragraphing - the structure first, then the diction (style), and then the transition. I will work with the student on broadening his writing vocabulary, so that the student chooses the correct word and an interesting, clear, succinct style for his writing. Together, the student and I will then examine and analyze several kinds of introductions conclusions. Along the way, I will answer any questions the student has and will always be patient and clear in my explanations.

Give me a call today. I am sure I can help!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
