As a classroom music instructor for seven years, I have tailored music studies for a broad range of students, from elementary to middle school ages; teaching basic music theory, notation, form, and the rudiments of how to play several instruments; such as piano, guitar, flute, clarinet, violin, viola, saxophones, double bass, and drums. I have also taught a continuing education guitar course for adults. I provided hands-on instrumental and vocal experiences coupled with music history from past to present; all designed in an age appropriate manner to foster and promote the gift of music. I taught my students about important musical figures and encouraged their appreciation of different musical genres. At Woods Academy, I was responsible for providing music for events via piano/keyboard accompaniment. Currently, I tutor theory, teach piano/guitar privately, record, and perform original compositions. I enjoy arranging and using Sibelius software for that purpose.

I am particularly fascinated by music theory and composition. Through my academic coursework at Bucknell and at Howard University where I received my undergraduate degree in music composition, I have applied this knowledge professionally throughout the years. I find it incredibly rewarding helping students reach a higher level of musicianship through the study of music theory.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years and have made it a curriculum unit as a teacher in independent middle schools for the past five years. I’ve also taught guitar to adult students at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland in the Continuing Education Division. I focus on building technique, finger dexterity, musicality, creativity, and a basic understanding of music theory. I encourage my students to assert their personal musical interests in terms of their own guitar performance, but to also explore diverse genres of music, such as; jazz, classical, folk, bossa nova, Spanish flamenco, rhythm & blues, blues, and rock. I am a Music Composition graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. My minor was piano performance. I am a multi-instrumentalist.

Music Theory

For the past six years, I taught music theory as part of a general music curriculum for independent schools consisting of primary and middle school students. I am a Music Composition graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. I am passionate about music theory because it is so infused with the art of composing music. As an experienced music teacher I have developed methods to bring the abstract, esoteric nature of music theory into kinetic musical practices; which enable students to more fully absorb music theory concepts such as harmony, form, modulation, and parametric analysis.

Piano

I began playing piano at age 8. I went on to earn my B. M. Composition degree with a minor in piano performance from Howard University in Washington D. C. in 1988. Today I am a professional musician and artist. I have taught piano, drums and guitar privately for many years in addition to teaching general music, directing school bands and choirs in public and private schools for the past seven years.

Songwriting

I am a Music Composition graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C. I’ve written hundreds of songs and pieces for various instrument/voice combinations. I appreciate many genres of music from Baroque to Contemporary Classical, jazz, pop, rock, and R & B/Funk. I have an album of originals called "Gainful Enjoyment."
